Star Trek Online

Well, I bought in so now I can enjoy the downtime with everyone else :D

It patched pretty quickly (after downloading from a beta mirror) and I got to create a character, but once I tried to beam across to the ship in the start tutorial I got kicked.

Seems to be stuck on 'Connecting to the Login Server' now. At least I was in-game long enough to max the video settings.

I'll apply for the fleet when I have a proper character, but I doubt I'll play much to start with, especially with the chaos that the next couple of weeks could be on official launch.

I love it how they just chuck you of when they need down time, would be nice to be told or atleast warned of when. grrr

I have noticed that the servers dont struggle when the americans are not about LOL

I don't think the current hardware can cope with even just the americans alone tbh. These problems have been happening in the wee hours of the morning our time when most euros are asleep.

I'd love to know some ballpark figures for how many purchases/people online as the amount of PvP queues have quadrupled between beta ending and head start. Thats with them being waay over capacity already in beta.

I just dont understand why their are load issues.. bad planning...lots of intrest...etc

I just dont understand why they dont spread the load somewhat by having more than one server shard. They could make say...5 servers..and name them something like Earth, Vulcan, Cardassia, Kronos, Ferenginar etc

To be honest, unless they have several thousand (or tens of) lifetime and annual subscribers, it makes sense to not scale up too quickly.

Otherwise, you end up with a lot of costly potentially redundant hardware.

Of course, they could at least do their best to keep the primetime of each zone (america/europe/asia) clear from maintenance so as to keep the fans happy.

Besides, it'll only be a week before the hardcore gamers are complaining of there being no end-game ;)

Bit of a problem though if you work or go to school during the day :D

True, I am teaching all of next week :(

An interesting thought from someone on the forums -

Hi all,

I have a sneaky suspicion that the CB/OB/HS was hosted on a testbed cluster and the retail launch will be switched over to the production cluster, complete with the shiney new (rushed order) servers to improve connectivity, capacity and reliability.

If this is true, it means that the HS people were used as the last guinea pigs to test some live code snippets.

Anyone else have the same/similar ideas?

God I hope so. If not, Cryptic have seriously screwed up.
