Yea how does this headstart code thing work anyway?
I thought the Open Beta code is the "headstart code"?
Or are there two separate codes?

At this point in time it looks like D2D is the option I may go for...

No, you are right actually. The headstart and open beta codes are the same thing.

For people already in the closed beta they will roll straight into the open beta.

Most people would agree that the D2D deluxe offer is the best.

Good good, that would be more promising than what I watched on that stream, didnt seem to be much involved in the pvp at all other than click target , whack space bar. Though as I say he could be a low level.

Any idea whether that additional depth will come before release? If theres still a lot not included with it releasing in a few weeks have they said whether they will manage to get it done in time?

It will get done in time, but will probably be quite bugged. For example bridges have just been added, but there are many bugs with them. As for depth, there is a lot of discussion on adding different ranges to weapons, making them less effective further away etc. Like I said though, higher tier ships have many different abilities. In addition to yourself and the bridge officers there will be a fair amount of depth. Plus, depending on whether you take a science, escort or cruiser the game will play very differently for you.

So you register the open beta key on their website and they give you a link to download the client or something?

Yep. You go to the STO website, register an account with them and on the right hand side of the homepage there is a register beta key link.

Pop in your key... and I'm guessing a link to download the client will appear tomorrow (or we'll get emailed it?).

Ok thanks matey.
I suppose in that case, I could buy it from one of the offline retailers, and get all the goodies in the box that come with the boxed version!
Cant resist DS9 uniform :D

Does anyone know if the fun shop is still doing betas etc?

Ok thanks again CaptainRAVE, nikebee et al!
Ordered offline version from for £35 :) Key will be sent on 11th.
So its all good! Plus I get T-shirt and goodies!
Oh happy days! (And I got a dissertation + projects to write!)

NX Prefix - You will get NX rather than USS...I quite like this one :). No it will not be available to standard edition players. Basically you choose your name and rather than USS Insertnamehere it will be NX Insertnamehere. Not sure how ship number is assigned. Some ID that I don't understand!

thought NX prefix applied to the ship registry number ie NX instead of NCC, USS <Name> still applies

eg: USS Excelsior was NX-2000 as a prototype and NCC-2000 when it was commissioned

Joined trill race - Just an additional race that gets a few extra skills. Annoyingly, not available at headstart but only on actual release day! So I will probably not get to use this one anyway. I prefer making my own race anyway though.

Emotes - Yes, emoticons e.g. waving etc

AFAIK NX is the prefix before the ship's number, rather than the name... Like instead of NCC-1701 you'd be NX-1701, all ships will be USS Somethingorother.

edit: haha, beaten by above!!!!

Hmm. I suppose Beta is a good place to practice for the game when its out ...

Wouldnt want to spend too much time levelling etc.. (assuming there is levelling in the game?)

The open beta is all about experiencing the game and mucking about really. Don't look too much into the game as you'd expect a fair few bugs to be around... and like has been said your chars will be wiped before the games starts.

There is levelling, and tiers in the game. You get betters ships and access to better tech the further up the ranks you go

What are you guys downloading? My code probably won't come through for the beta till February, knowing HMV, but can I get on the client DL now? If so, where?

To download the OB client you need to sign in, and to have the OB download you need to register your OB key with the account :( so if you don't have an OB key it won't allow you to download the client :(

I've put my open beta STO preorder key into the STO website, still can't see any download links.

I don't think they're publishing the Open Beta client links until the 12th, that seems to be the speculation from the official forums/facebook and a few other sites at least.

You can download the client now :)

http://www.startrekonline.com/download

DO NOT PATCH UP TO ST.0.20100108a.1! It will BORK you for Open Beta and require you to download the client again.

We are looking into why you can patch - but for now - you are only hurting yourself by patching up now.

Looks like something has screwed up badly! Many people with open beta keys are currently downloading/patching the client, myself included, but by the sounds of it the Dev is saying we shouldn't.
