Would make sense, though it would make much more sense if it wasnt restricted to certain zones. I mean ships in Star Trek attack anywhere and everywhere, wouldnt have made much sense if upon arriving at Ocheron V and encountering a Klingon Warbird, Capt Picard just shrugged at Ryker and said, its ok number one, they arent able to attack us

(even more so if you then consider the attitudes of other races who aggressively attack, like Cardassians, Ferengi or Breen)

Maybe they might launch with a full PvP server?

There is only one server for the entire world so another server with different PvP rulesets is unlikely.

I have my fingers crossed that they do decide to open up PvP a bit more as it's one aspect that's been lacking from Cryptic's games.

Actually it is quite likely. One server, many instances. They could just have different rulesets on different instances. This is one of the many options being discussed on the beta forums.

Id personally like if there was no open pvp or if they do allow pvp anywhere then it has to be from challenges, nothing worse than going about doing missons only for some **** 5 lvls higher to kill you.

Cryptic would never have this in one of their games. There will be either open PvP zones or a few open PvP instances. Either way, I am interested to see how this will turn out.

I'm guessing they will add in the ability to play other civilizations, perhaps as an expansion pack. Cardassians and Romulans would be obvious choices for an expansion pack.

I wouldn't be suprised if we got Borg as a playable race at some point from an expansion, although probably only as a PvP race like the Klingon's are now.

All of which has been discussed by the devs as a possibility post launch . The races are there, so i don't see it being that difficult to develop.

Aye, although I really really really hope they don't make the same mistake that everyone else tends to do and just releases new content without fixing the older stuff. For instance I'm hoping that they add way more PvE content for Klingons.

I don't think they will. Based on the number of changes between each testing session, they seem to have the capability to make A LOT happen. Plus, Cryptic would never hear the end of it on the forums. I too hope they add more PvE content for the Klingons. I really enjoyed the brief time I spent playing them.

aye D2D is now listing a client download, 7.7gig, version 20100108

Hopefully it will be a couple of gigs bigger than that. All of the patches combined from the closed beta must be somewhere around 12Gb now, and I am expecting another big patch before open beta. Not sure how the patches stack though, I guess some could overwrite existing files. Still, we have had some huge patches! Cryptics patching server will die for open beta and release...it always does, even though it will have been upgraded recently

well pre-ordered just for a beta slot, after so many failed MMo's in recent years whats the general consensus about this one ? ie good or bad ?

Closed beta feedback has been very positive so far.

good good, it's just with so many MMo's promising so much and then failing to deliver i'm much more hesitant these days. I also admit to not really considering STO but like all new releases it would be rude not to try out

Well there is a lot more they could have done (and hopefully will post release), but it is much better than most of us were expecting - especially following Champions Online. The best thing you can do is to try it out with an open mind and see if you enjoy it.

Lucky, that is the latest version. Shouldnt be too much more than a 2GB patch released for open beta...hopefully not even that much!

On another note, I would have to say that STO is not ready for open beta. There are still too many bugs. I know it is an MMO, but there are bugs there that will just turn people away. Cryptic have their work cut out of the next few weeks.

D2D email out a key when you purchase from them. You should still get into open beta through them.

Most retailers stop the offer a few days before the beta. Don't think the digital retailers do until the end of beta. I could be wrong though.

Are digital retailers giving out open beta keys still? If so, who else apart from Steam is doing STO? (Presumably its STO Deluxe edition I want in order to get into the open beta?)

Sorry for my noobness But surely another digital retailer is doing this for less than 50 quid?

D2D is doing a better Deluxe edition and cheaper. They still say they are offering open beta access and will send your key immediatly. I know that with champions they were still sending out keys throughout the open beta for people who decided to "buy in". Just keep in mind that Steam and D2D take your money immediatly and it can be quite a pain to try and get it back!

Probably better to get it offline for cheaper perhaps? Is there anyone else online doing it for cheaper than Steam/D2D?

Just more bonuses with D2D e.g. Joined Trill Race that I don't think Steam is offering (I could be wrong). I don't think there are many other ways to get into the beta now (certainly not cheaply). However, you can compare all offers at http://www.startrekonline.com/retail. Tbh you won't be missing much from the open beta anyway. Just wait for the headstart and more of the bugs will have been removed

Ok Im a few clicks away from buying this.
What would I be missing from the Deluxe Edition compared to the standard edition (apart from the box/DVD paper gubbins).

Through the digital retailers - just a few bonus items that will quckly become obsolete, except for the joined trill race skill bonus, a few emotes and the NX prefix

Through the other retails just the items you mention.

I ordered the deluxe from D2D, but it all depends on how much you want to spend (keeping in mind there will be a sub) and how badly you want all of the bonus extras.

Feel free to ask anything else, I know way too much about this game :s

Joined trill race - You saying I wouldnt be able to select trill as a race if I bought the standard version?
Emotes - Emoticons in the game?
NX Prefix - You saying you can give your Ship a number and it starts with NX? And that it wouldnt be available to non-Deluxe users? (i.e. would NCC be available for example?)

Joined trill race - Just an additional race that gets a few extra skills. Annoyingly, not available at headstart but only on actual release day! So I will probably not get to use this one anyway. I prefer making my own race anyway though.

Emotes - Yes, emoticons e.g. waving etc

NX Prefix - You will get NX rather than USS...I quite like this one . No it will not be available to standard edition players. Basically you choose your name and rather than USS Insertnamehere it will be NX Insertnamehere. Not sure how ship number is assigned. Some ID that I don't understand!
