Star Trek Online

But.....LOL....you're saying people are ready for the "end game" already??

*Walks away never to look back*

It should take a minimum of 3-4 months to get anywhere near the "end game" in an MMORPG.

The game being very linear is a major problem, no exploration what so ever.

I thought it was quite clear. The video after the character creation lays it out for you.

The Klingons have pulled out of the Khitomer accord. Romulas are on the back foot. The Borg are back in town. Dominion are fast building up their fleet once again, and species 8472 have decided to knock on the door of the Alpha Quadrant.

Makes it interesting to me. And it is no more linear than the likes of say Warcraft.

To be fair STO is a hell of a lot more linear than wow.

So we are now accepting fiction and lies in place of fact and honest opinion? Somone should have informed me of this...

It just looks like a lot of people were looking for a game like EVE. STO was never meant to be anything like EVE (I am personally glad of this - I never liked EVE - too many people taking it way too seriously).

Fiction and lies? Can you tell me anywhere in my post that I said that those thoughts were nothing more than my honest opinion? If you like the game then fair enough, who am I to say otherwise? Just don't call me a liar when I did nothing of the sort.

Also, if you had bothered to read my post you'd see that I could not get into EVE. The only thing from EVE I'd like it to emulate is the one shard/open world idea. My problem with the game is what I feel is lack of depth and that it does not feel like Star Trek.

Compare apples for apples. I.e. when WoW was first released compared to STO. I remember WoW playing in exactly the same way as STO (quest wise at least).

I.e. given quest. Run around. Bish bash bosh. Hand in. Given another quest. Bish bash bosh. Hand in. Go to new area etc etc.
(ok not as simplistic as that but you get the idea :p)

Erm, have you tried the genesis content in star clusters? There is almost endless exploration (although I would agree they need to work on it - but the foundations are there).

Yes, there are some people! But regardless of the MMO, you will always get some people who get to the end game content in a week - and then complain that there isn't much of it.

This (not accusing you of doing it) -
It's all very well shooting down someones argument with facts and honest opinions, but deriding someone for wanting to go back to a more polished and established game is immature.

What else am I supposed to shoot them down with? The critic was clearly biased - there are many positives that he could have mentioned. He just chose not to.

My EVE comment also wasn't directed at anyone in particular.

You could have mentioned those positives? As it stands, to me your post seemed like a one sided assault on someone who did nothing but provide his opinions. If you wanted to prove him wrong, why not do so?

As I said the primary positive for me is the space combat, as I find it very enjoyable. The problem is that it seems to make up a small and very limited part of the game. Unfortunately, this is the only enjoyable part I could think of.

I personally have found it to be the opposite, most of my time seems to be fighting space battles (which is good as the ground combat is poor, though nowhere near as poor as it was a couple of months ago!).

To me I dont understand why they didnt offer something other then being someone who shoots someone.

They could have used the same idea SWG had before the CU and had players who were just crafters and traders, making the weapons and armour, added to that some sort of smuggler who could take the parts from system to system etc

What your end up with is the same as wow where each ship is a carbon copy of the next with the same weapons etc

Looks like the future of mmo's may rely on Bioware to hopefully deliver a decent Star Wars game. We got a while to wait.

And the genesis content is just flying from one gas cloud to another and getting a quest hardly exciting. The thing that impressed me most about SWG was going over each planet and finding crazy arse houses in the middle of nowhere and player made towns which worked very well, why no other mmo has done that in the same way I have no idea.

I thought Cryptic said exploration and many other things were going to come with time. To expect it to be alike another certain game is abit unfair don't you think?

Get the basics right and build on that surely?

Only problem is they havent got the basics right at all.

Possibly but then, surely lets see what the final build is like and I am abit confused why people expect it to tally upgainst something like EvE that has been around for ages.

All things need alittle time to grow.

Ok, late to the game here. My partner and I were considering getting this. Neither of us has ever played an MMO, but figured something in the Star Trek universe would be cool.

Now, while I know there will always be a divide between those who love or hate a game, I am picking up a lot of negativity around this one.

I am assuming it's a bit late to get in on the beta (especially considering won't have PC til WEdnesday soonest) so is there going to be a demo period for this, or do you just need to fork out and buy it to try?

Don't want to waste money on buying game if t turns out we don't like it. Unless I can sell the discs on?

I've got to say, ignore the critics and give it a go yourself. They just want a game on launch as refined if it was 6 years old.

Now now now types of people. But like any game its personal choice.

Best advice any sensible person can give.

Give it a go yourself (perhaps wait for free trials that will appear within a few months) and see what you think. Probably better waiting a few months for the initial bugs to be ironed out anyway.

The way I see it.

If you are a trekkie, start right now.
If you are not, wait a few months for some bugs to be ironed out.

Being a fan of the genre should offset any irks caused by bugs etc :p
