Star Trek Online

The cynical person would say thats precisely what they want you to think. No genre is more about the carrot and the dangle than the MMO genre ;)

Those that experienced the CO launch would probably say that what they are holding back is a massive combat rebalance that no one has tested. :)

Not that I minded, actually made CO challanging at times compared to the over powered defensive powers.

To be fair, looking back that patch was really needed - 5 team lairs should not be able to be completed by one person, but they were by quite a few different builds!

However, the devs have said on the official forums that this will not happen with STO - hopefully they have learned from that mistake, because while needed it did annoy a lot of people!

The fact that the whole STO universe could be so easily changed to open PvP showed the potential of this game. I really hope they will eventually make some instances available where there can be open PvP anywhere - it worked well last night (except the obvious problem of Klingons needed random spawn sites and the lack of objectives). To be fair, most of the problem last night was the fact that computer gamers are jerks

Although I was kind of enjoying it, it seemed too limited in places. Just cancelled preorder and will look at it in a while. Just signed up to Darkfall Online though :p

Thats a good sign, now to hope that it wasnt something done purely for the end of beta. Would be nice if they changed the "gameworld" to open PvP immediately for launch rather than being something that they might do, later on, possibly, maybe, somewhere down the line, perhaps.

Oh I don't disagree, it was certainly needed. However there are better ways of going about it than that!

Unfortunately "gamers are jerks" is what puts me off open PVP games where the prime differentiator is "time online" rather than any sort of skill. I would drop STO like a stone if it turned into open PvP anywhere.

Thing is RDM, the cap will be quite easy to get to so time spent wont be much of a factor. Gear wise ofc the more time you grind the more items you will get but then thats luck based aswell.
Gamer jerks are just playing the game in their style, personally i love these people as it adds an element of danger to the game. GIVE US OPEN PVP!

Who's going to police PvP? Youll just end up with consistent war and loose other aspects such as exploration, maybe building up companies/organizations/other starbases, other planets, other universes.

Why does their have to be a constant combat obsession?

But while working towards the cap I will have to be looking out for idiots and even when at the cap I will have to be looking out for groups of idiots. Really not a playstyle I enjoy.

And I hate these type of people as it pretty much has a negative impact on my gaming. Hence I go for games that are primarily PVE or have restricted PvP where that sort of thing is less likely to happen. Which is the sort of game that STO has been sold as.

It would be the same if a heavy PVP player signed up to say "Mortal Online" and then it was changed to restrictive PvP or PvE. They wouldn't be happy having the game changed.

Well it IS Star Trek, its largely about conflict and war. Star Trek isnt so much about building up companies and organizations.

Well the apart from the danger, the game feels less linear when you have people out and about. Organising sqauds for retaliation doesnt sound fun to you?

Imagine playing klingon side and creating a squad. You all warp into the sol system cloak up and hide behind the moon, then unleash a massive assault. FUN!

Rubbish Tomb, Star Trek is about exploration, aliens with funny foreheads, and snogging green women :D

Then destroying the aliens with the funny foreheads and leaving the green women for the next woman who shows up :D

Kirk didnt become a legend by building a ore mining company and making a range of clothing shops ! (which is just as well really as his clothing seemed to rip quite easily :D )

Bar that Sol should be the most protected system in the federation (enough have tried to attack it)

So lets leave Sol alone.

I mean't it would be nice to have missions (alike mass effect) that have sidelines and so forth or ones that mean you didnt have to fight all the time. IE: Stop a sun exploding

Also in the trek universe was equally about exploration, new frontiers and science as it was fighting.

How about getting to rank that lets you set up a starbase and offer different services , so on on and on.

I wouldnt want it across the whole server - because everyone have the right to choose. But I could certainly see them having instances reserved just for a PvP universe - or some kind of option before you start playing. There are ways to get around forcing EVERYONE into open PvP.

CR - did you go for a life time sub?

Yup, got my lifetime sub :D

That would be pretty difficult though because Starfleet officers didnt go around making starbases and opening up shops. You would need to add an entirely different career line to the game which wasnt Starfleet. But then of course you wouldnt be a starship captain, which would mean no space faring and no running about with phasers shooting things.
