Star Trek : Strange New Worlds

Agree with other comments about it being woke.. racism and discrimination comparisons were gringe, the insinuation of institutional racism / discrimination and a feisty black women defending.. Sad that they did it this way, but it's no surprise. She was inspired by diversity..... Of course.

Not an awful episode, but could have been much better without the political nonsense.

But wasn’t the “political nonsense” the whole point of the episode!

I thought it was great

Quite.

The episode wasn't (particularly) heavy-handed with it, not by nuTrek standards. The point was made that there are sound reasons for the Federation's anti genetic modification views - the horrors of the Eugenics Wars and World War III don't want repeating. But cases should be judged on merits, Una to that point had had an exemplary career, and there was a law on the books that allowed for Pike exercising some discretion regarding her status.

The only part I didn't like was the black woman defending closing statement, it dragged on for what seemed like 15 mins, (it was probably shorter but she made it seems like that) she made the same point 2-3 times lying it on thick before I started to fast forward the rest of her 'speech'. The rest of episode was pretty good.

New to Star Trek? Those sort of issues are peak Gene Roddenberry.

I guess Shatner Kissing Nicols was "woke", before woke was woke :) I'm a bit too young to have experienced it, I know it was controversial, I assume there was there a big noisy group decrying that such a thing was put of TV at all.
I suspected that ep1 was light on Pike because he was away doing something else. The doc and Chapel getting on their John Wick was quite "out there".

EP2 for me had strong overtures to the early Tos episode where Pike in the wheelchair was on trial.

I think this series is as close to ToS as Trek has come.

Need more Nurse Chapel :)

In fairness, NBC was expecting rather more backlash than they actually got. Most conservative Americans just shrugged and said 'well, of course Kirk would kiss her'.

Yep. An in-universe explanation for Anson Mount being on paternity leave, essentially.

Seen some random article claiming that new worlds now had transformers in it. And what were they talking about? The ass end of this episode where the d7 nacelle is deploying its disruptor cannon.... Apparently actually having an emitter for them to fire from vs them randomly firing from the nacelles like in TOS is 'transformers' worthy.

I often wonder if that's why in DS9 the older D7\Ktinga had a really random phaser blast coming from the torpedo tube, its like they didn't know where to have the disruptors fire from or didn't want to mess with things by adding emitters onto the model so just decided it was from the torpedo tube. Never did look right in DS9.

You have to admit it was a bit odd, it was a cool visual but didn't make any sense

I don't think I have ever seen a good TV series put on Youtube for free. Turned this one off after a few mins too. It's Discovery with different hats on is all.

Its not the series it is.

Watch the first episode of series 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, right here, for free. You can stream the entire series on Paramount+. Start your 7-day free trial and subscribe to Paramount+ at https://www.paramountplus.com

Its called promotion. They do the same thing on Channel 5 with Paramount stuff. First one is on C5 then you have to get the subscription.

It's probably killing them to have two white men playing the main roles, they're somewhat overcompensating with the strong women officers. Discovery pretty much did away with the straight white men so we know what direction they will go given the choice.

They already had Number One, Uhura and Chapel, but that apparently wasn't enough, so they added Ortega who's just annoying, and La'an who makes no sense.

That fight scene with the doctor and the super drug was just ridiculous btw. This series won't age well, nobody is going to want to re-watch this show. Not surprised it's free now. lol

Everyone who has taste will rewatch this show. Its very very good. Why would you be scared of a few strong female characters. They aren't woke or modern. They've always been there. People just moan about it now. Ripley being the big one that comes to mind as a strong female lead as well as Sarah Conner.

TNG has a number of episodes that really haven't aged well. But still watchable.

What a horrible world your head must live in.

Taste? "very very good" Lol

Most of the episodes are watchable at best. It's an improvement over Discovery, but that's not really saying much.

I'm not even complaining about strong women in lead roles, just pointing out for every straight white male character on the bridge crew in this show there are two/three strong women to compensate for you know what.

If they could get away with making Pike, Kirk or Spock black or female, they'd do it.

Thankfully we're not quite there yet. :)

What a Strange little world your head lives in.

You mean the real world? I'm not the one in denial about the effect of intersectionality and critical race theory on Hollywood and the western world in general. Why are so many Hollywood movies flops now? I know exactly why, but you're in the dark for some reason...

Strange New Worlds 2x03 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"

La'an travels back in time to twenty-first-century Earth to prevent an attack which will alter Humanity's future history – and bring her face to face with her own contentious legacy.

The Good

Fun little montage at the beginning of La'an Noonien Singh  at work. Mediating disputes, having to bust Spock for practicing his Vulcan lute too loudly, dealing with Pelia's...Pelia-ness.
Joy of joys, an episode teaser that wasn't the length of a whole act of screenplay! So they can do it, then.
Paul Wesley might not quite be Bill Shatner's James T. "I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am" Kirk. But that moment where he struts off to go make money playing chess was pretty damned good. Kirk was always shown as a match for Spock in TOS and the novels at 3D chess*, so this made for a nice 'hooray for continuity!' moment.
Also in 'hooray for continuity!' - Kirk is initially a lousy driver (see TOS' "A Piece of the Action"), Wah Ming Chang's Bird of Prey design making a welcome reappearance (love that little ship), Pelia having been in Vermont back in 2022, Kirk getting to kiss his Girl Of The Week as the music swells in the background (a moment that is just straight out of TOS ;)), the Temporal Wars from ENT getting namedropped, the Department of Temporal Investigations...
Christina Chong acted her heart out this week. I still think her character's existence is problematic, but she did an exceptional job here.

The Bad

Time and repeated exposure is not improving the Enterprise redesign for me. It just doesn't look right. I have to believe there was a way of giving us something that looked closer to NCC-1701, no bloody A, B, C or D, than this.
Even for a franchise like Star Trek, that has done everything at least once, this was a story moving along well-trodden ground. To the point where after the explosion in Toronto went off I was able to say, out loud and practically in time with La'an, 'get to the bridge'. Are the current crop of nuTrek writers hacks, or have I just seen it all a few times too many? Who knows. All I know is, barely a single beat of this episode surprised me in any way right down to the non-twist with Sera. Is it as witless as nearly all of the Disco plots? No. Nothing like as boring either. But definitely predictable.
I mean...I love the Dodge Challenger as much as the next muscle car fan, but you're not telling me that putting Kirk and La'an in a widebody Hellcat wasn't some Pretty Wildly Overt Product Placement™? All those loving camera angles, the drifting around corners, the 'pulling a Rockford' (J-turn)
Anson Mount must have still been on paternity leave when they filmed this, hence the disappointing lack of Pike and his majestic hair right until the final few minutes. But then, almost the whole regular cast got sidelined this time out.

The Kurtzman

La'an Noonien Singh
Oh, the comedy of a character being unable to deal with a revolving door. How terribly amusing.
Can we be done with the angst-ing over Khan Noonien Singh's existence for a bit now? Please? Both he and the spectre of him have been overdone of late.

The Uncategorised

From * in The Good. My favourite example in the series is the game he's playing against Spock in "Where No Man Has Gone Before". But there's also a cool moment in Vonda N. McIntyre's novel "Enterprise: The First Adventure". Kirk sees Spock playing 3D chess alone, Spock says he is doing so because no-one aboard plays to his level. Kirk announces mate in three moves and wanders off. Spock goes after him a few minutes later, asking if Kirk was joking. Kirk says he wasn't. Spock asks to play it out, and Kirk makes a move. Spock resigns, noting the illogic and risk of Kirk's move but conceding the effectiveness. The two then play a full game that Kirk wins.

You mean the real world? I'm not the one in denial about the effect of intersectionality and critical race theory on Hollywood and the western world in general.

Please define 'critical race theory' for me.

Why are so many Hollywood movies flops now? I know exactly why, but you're in the dark for some reason...

Over-saturation of the genres they're trying to squeeze into, too many remakes, too many sequels, wildly inflated budgets that are next to impossible to make back and when they do make money the studio lies that they haven't in order to get tax breaks. Next question? ;)
