Star Trek : Strange New Worlds

just like Kirk being born in Space rather than earth in the alternatetimeline im sure that Spock isnt half human.

But then why does he look exactly like 'our' Spock? ;)

I know Trek is very fond of mangling any and all ideas to do with DNA, genetics and so on, but c'mon - at least throw on a prosthetic nose, try and change him up a little bit!

Always love your commentary JRS so a Trek pleb like me can keep up :)

I have nothing of value to add, other than the random "See as the goat sees" beer advertising and when the ydo the day to night transition and pan down the office building, you can see someone try and crawl through one of the doors undetected.

I guess Shatner Kissing Nicols was "woke", before woke was woke :) I'm a bit too young to have experienced it, I know it was controversial, I assume there was there a big noisy group decrying that such a thing was put of TV at all.
I suspected that ep1 was light on Pike because he was away doing something else. The doc and Chapel getting on their John Wick was quite "out there".

EP2 for me had strong overtures to the early Tos episode where Pike in the wheelchair was on trial.

I think this series is as close to ToS as Trek has come.

Need more Nurse Chapel :)

More of an una fan myself! :D

Taste? "very very good" Lol

Most of the episodes are watchable at best. It's an improvement over Discovery, but that's not really saying much.

I'm not even complaining about strong women in lead roles, just pointing out for every straight white male character on the bridge crew in this show there are two/three strong women to compensate for you know what.

If they could get away with making Pike, Kirk or Spock black or female, they'd do it.

Thankfully we're not quite there yet. :)

Why does it matter?
Genuinely always wonder this.

Does it matter if an actor has different hair?
Does it matter if they have a different voice?
Different height?

I can understand the gender thing a bit but not the skin colour. That's just bizarre.

Its such a bizarre thing to get caught up in.

I guess I'm lucky. I love programs with strong female leads.

Strange New Worlds 2x04 - "Among the Lotus Eaters"

Returning to a planet that dredges up tragic memories, Captain Pike and his landing party find themselves forgetting everything, including their own identities as he confronts a ghost from his past.

The Good

Hooray for continuity, and a return to Rigel VII. This planet was first mentioned in Star Trek waaaaaaaaaay back as being the last place visited before the story of the original pilot "The Cage" and the experience had Pike wondering whether it might be the moment to call time on his career. The events of "The Cage" reignited his passion for the job.
VFX team on point, as ever.
Anson Mount on point, as ever.
Fun little dialogue moments sprinkled throughout.
Some pretty highbrow concepts going on - mining Greek mythology for the title and story theme, the pain of some memories being worth having them, people being guided by emotion when everything else is gone...Trek always has been best when not talking down to its audience.

The Bad

Either the SNW shuttles are truly enormous (very possible), or that interior set fits about as well as the Discoball ones fit inside that ship.
Una completely disappeared from the action halfway through. I know she was affected by the plot MacGuffin fairly early on, but still. Indicative of issues writing for this size of regular cast perhaps?
Speaking of the plot MacGuffin - it acted in a pretty inconsistent way, a fact lampshaded by Chapel early on in the Enterprise crew's investigating of it.

The Kurtzman

I hesitated about this, but...plot elements here have been done quite a lot in Trek over the years. Cultural contamination by Starfleet/Federation personnel, a former friend turned adversary, the 'plucky native helps out the away team' deal...is it an anchor to Treks of old, or just overused tropes. I'm really not sure.
I said a couple of weeks ago that I'd like to see Ortegas get some development. Not sure this qualifies, even if it did put her front-and-centre for a portion of the episode.

Ortegas was annoying as usual in the first part of the episode, but thought she was much better later. Although
it was seen and explained that they could remember basic tasks, yet she pilots a starship and was firing phasers with no issues :)

Good episode and finally Pike is back!

No need to be nasty. All this BS talk of woke and crap really gets on my wick. It's all in people's heads. We're you also outraged when disabled people started getting prominent acting roles or redheads? Everyone is entitled to be fairly represented in the media. Its not woke or extreme. What is annoying is in shows like discovery where they constantly talk about it and make it obvious they are the focus and not the story. StW certainly doesn't do that. She is just a good pilot amd other member of the bridge crew.

Once again, I'm really gonna need a hard-and-fast definition of 'woke' from these guys...and then an explanation, in words of one syllable preferably 'cause I ain't too bright, about how SNW fits their definition.

Also, @arknor - did you think comparing Ortegas to Beavis was a dunk on her??? Beavis & Butthead is a ******* great show

Personally I think recently the word has been used too often by people that don't understand the term and the real meaning has gotten lost on those using it frequently.
It's original meaning was for being aware of social and political issues, which to me is a good thing and was originally used by a lot of the black population including Erica Badu, Lead Belly in the 1940s and those in the BLM movementmore recently. Now its being slung around by silly white people who seem to this it's an insult or a bad thing. Since the 2010s gen Z and millennials have used it to include gender identity matters. Used also by right wing groups using it against those who are more progressive and aware of issues affecting marginalised groups.

Thought the season started off weak but ep4 was a strong traditional "trek" episode. Starting to gel with the cast better and seeing the internal conflicts they all face. A re-watch of each episode is helping.
