I'm so conflicted. I'm enjoying the series but I cannot stand musicals whatsoever, so I'm not sure if I'm going to try and watch it or not.

It feels like they're using this series as a test for the tone of the series and the kind of writing we prefer. They seem to have covered most of the cookie-cutter Star Trek themes except a multi-episode Borg style threat. The episodes and character development are only very loosely related to each other otherwise.
The singing forma the core of the story script though. Revealing the crews thoughts and emotions relating to each other and the previous situations. So you do miss quite a bit skipping them.Totally agree, it's reasonably easy to fast forward through the actual singing bits, and not lose out too much on whats happening, which is what I did..
Although I did rewind and play, when I saw the Klingons singing, during the "big" number, and that was quite funny/cool

La'an's song is probably the most impactful I thought. The actress sounds like she has some professional singing experience, which I suppose isn't uncommon in Hollywood.Anson really can do anything.
