Star Trek : Strange New Worlds

So, in the end instantaneous communication just isn't worth having to put up with this level of cheese 24/7 :D

Seems like it could've been a useful weapon against the Klingons...

What's going on with appearance of the Klingons now?

They showed a clip of them from Star Trek Discovery (I watched a series or 2 but got bored) where they look very alien, now they look like they did in The Next Generation (basically humans with bits glued on)

Or is it best not to ask?

While I love a good musical, this didn't work for me. This falls into the trap of most TV musical episodes in that the songs are long, drawn out and don't push the narrative or story forward like they do in good musicals. The non-singing parts were actually quite good and interesting but when they start singing the whole thing grinds to a halt, I zone out and get bored.

While certainly better and more watchable than last season's The Elysian Kingdom, it's still only a watch-once and move-on type deal. It's just too cringe in some scenes. But I did burst out laughing at the Klingon moment and almost made the episode worth watching.

It was nice to see they kept Kirks back story cannon and I had totally forgotten about Carol! Although I thought a La'An/Kirk pair up would have been interesting I get why they didn't go down that route.

A clip from perhaps my favourite episode of the original series (series 1), Kirk quite effectively insulting his friend's intelligence, robotic characteristics and heritage:

To save him and the rest of his crew from the drug induced 'happy planet', because kirk has a hard on for duty and his ship.

From these new Strange New World episodes, we learn that Kirk must already know that in many ways, Spock is quite human, with similar vulnerability.

So, yeah, Kirk just being a massive douche really

Thanks, can't complain, it has served me well thus far, the RX 7900 XT is still fairly 'new', got on clearance.
I am getting great performance from it and playing Hogwarts Legacy with RT enabled it looks stunning and still gets great fps.

I thought some songs were just for the comedy but there were certainly a couple that delved deeper into the characters and gave them more depth.

Hmmm, could not get into the "Star Trek does Fame" episode. A little bit like the "Star Trek does pirates of the carribean" episode that they had in season 1. Historically, series doing these obscure off the wall episodes were a sign of them running out of ideas, and often happened many series in. We already had a "cartoon characters drop into the enterprise" episode which was childish enough, thankfully if you missed the first few mins and the last few minutes the episode worked. How someone thought it was important that 2-d characters from the future got stuck in their timeline, rather than real people, I do not know. What next, Pike and spock end up going back in time and end up trapped in a flintstones episode with their legs poking out the bottom of the enterprise ?

Anyhow I'd had enough of the "Vulcan of the enterprise" after the first few lines of singing Spock (can't even believe I just typed that).

Seems like a cop out to me, who among those in the decision makers who cherish the integrity of ST decided "lets do a musical" ? Bound to be a load of folks associated with the program that wanted to be a million miles from that episode but couldn't. You can imagine Jonathan Frakes reaction to "fancy directing MaMa enterprise - here we go again ?"

Pity to have such crap in what has been a pretty decent series, lets hope the next episode (is it the last one ?) is a good 'un. At least we can be reasonably certain that Star "les miz" Trek won't feature in the "previously on strange new worlds" intro for the next episode. Hopefully it'll be like it never happened.

No cop out at all. They wanted to do a musical for a while and had to wait till they got the right story and everything else.

Many popular shows have done musical episodes and it's usually for a bit of fun. Nothing to do with desperation or running out of ideas. Yes its not for everyone. But Trek has always done silly or funny episodes.

Frakes dissected the Lower Decks episode and am sure he would have been up for this one as he has a good sense of humour. They may be 'cartoon characters ' but they are still Canon Trek characters.

I thought it was fine and in offensive really. I don’t mind a musical episode and “once more with feeling” is a great BTVS episode. One thing tho with all of these that I have seen is that it often looks like it’s just been dubbed over and I am sure in most cases it was as it’s extremely hard to pull off.

One thing that puzzled me was that it’s pretty ambiguous in The Wrath of Khan if Kirk knew David was his son. If Carol Marcus was pregnant in this time period and goes off and later he meets them in the events of The Wrath of Khan then it would be pretty obvious to Kirk that David is his son but I don’t recall that being the case and he was taken aback by the revelation.

Damn I am gonna have to watch The Wrath of Khan again.

I went into the episode dreading what I would find, I came away with sore ribs because of just how cheesy it was especially NKotB (New Klingons on the Block)

Me too. I ended up laughing at all the musical bits though I do think it could have done without the dancing as the singing thing could be explained in the same way flying at warp speed and transporters but not the dancing routines. They take ages to coordinate and I speak from experience.

I really enjoyed it but I am absolutely smashed.
