Star Trek

:(

Stick with that. That was the last peak of TV franchise, it went downhill from there.

I would definitely agree that it does go down hill after that but Voyager and, to a lesser extent, Enterprise (although a small cute and cuddly tribble explodes every time that theme tune is played) are both worth watching.

I'm currently going through Enterprise now, on about season 1 episode 16, and what has surprised me is how good it is. There have been a good few enjoyable episodes yet first time around I hated the show. Obviously at the time I was biased against Enterprise (why "Star Trek" was absent from the title for two whole seasons is a mystery to me), particularly because it was a prequel. However, the characters are starting to grate a little, in particular I'm starting to feel that old familiar bile rise in my throat whenever Archer swaggers onto the screen and I just know that Season 2 does little for progressing this whole Temporal Cold War thingy which was a fairly crap idea in the first place.

I've been there and done that.

The writers at the time must have been thinking, well we're getting canceled anyways so lets go out on a completely and utterly stupid note. After such a good season as well, what were they playing at

Way of the warrior and sacrafice of angels were pretty good for battles just a pity most of the cgi got recycled and recycled and recycled over and over in any action scene. Dunno how many times after that i seen an excelsior classs get taken out by 1 phaser hit (apparently no shields in battles) or that one miranda class (soyeuz class maybe) lookalike get its saucer cut through and come tumbling towards the camera.

I never got why they did that though, they set out this whole standard about how things work but when it came to battles everything went out the window, ships got taken out with 1 phaser hit (even fresh to the battle) and nobody seemed to have any shields. Suppose costs were a big factor though.

When you get to the time-travelling space Nazis episode (no, I'm not ****ing you) you'll throw the DVDs out the window.

Which would be a shame, because Season 4 actually did a lot to repair the damage. They threw away the Temporal Cold War crap, fixed a few things, showed the building blocks and tentative steps towards forming the Federation....just a pity we had to go through Evil Alien Nazis!™ to get there.

Other sources such as the classic TNG Technical Manual suggested that a lot of old or surplus starships would be mothballed or dismantled and distributed amongst the Federation so that in a time of war they could whack a warp core and a bunch of phasers in it and send it to the front. Hence the reasoning that their shields are probably 50 years old and no better than paper against 'modern' weapons.

Of course the real reason is that it looks cool :D

Edit: I believe we do that with our navies even today!

I've been slowly amassing my dvd/blu ray collection and I will sometime soon be watchign every episode/movie in star date order. This will account for people making appearances in other series :)

To help with this I've started compiling an excel file. If anyone is interested when I am finished I can post it here.

Startrek is great

But Babylon 5 is more richer in characters and story line.
I cried like a bitch whilst watching the last episode.
I never felt so wrapped up in a tv program in all my life, you could relate to the characters and the story just unclipped like a silk bra.;)

So far watched Enterprise again and nearly through Voyager, next stop Babylon 5 :)

Watching them all back to back you can see similaries in some of the episode plots

MW

i have to agree, babylon 5 is epic, i've been watching it on fx and it's still awesome even now so much so i bought the box set and i have now got my son and one of my mates hooked :D

If you're trying to follow the ST time line, then (I think) the order would be:

ST Enterprise
Star Trek 11 (movie)
ST TOS
The Motion Picture
The Wrath of Khan
The Search for Spock
The Voyage Home
The Final Frontier
The Undiscovered Country
ST TNG
ST DS9
Generations (finish ST TNG before this)
First Contact
ST Voyager
Insurrection
Nemesis (finish ST Voyager before this)

You need to break it down further than that.

Watch the first 5 seasons of TNG, then watch season 6 along with the first season of DS9 and TNG s7 along with DS9 s2.
DS9 s3 and Season 1 of Voyager next, then watch Generations before starting DS9 s4 and Voyager s2.
Watch the first 9 episodes of s5 before watching First Contact then finish the season and catch Voyager s3.
Ds9 s6 & Voyager s4.
You can watch Insurrection at any point before the end of DS9 (somewhere in the middle is good).
Finish off Voyager before seeing Nemesis.

I'd leave enterprise and the new movie until after all that, 'cause there are a lot of winks and nods :)

And yes, I'm one of those weirdoes who liked Enterprise :p Season 4 was some of the best Trek ever, and I can only imagine how good season 5, the Romulan War and the birth of the Federation would have been.

So in what order would you suggest watching ST:TOS (s2e15) The Trouble With Tribbles and ST: DS9 (s5e6) Trials And Tribble-ations ? :D
