IRAQIS 'FIRE ON CIVILIANS'

Thousands of civilians fleeing Basra are reported to have been fired on by Iraqi forces inside the city.

Sky News correspondent Emma Hurd says that between 1,000 and 2,000 people were heading out of the west of the city, toward the 7th Armoured Brigade of the Coaltion forces.

"They had to cross a bridge and once they got there it seems that forces inside the city - members of the irregular forces, the Fedayeen - opened fire.

"The people then ran back into the city. It's quite a disturbing picture," said Hurd.

British military officials say there are reports of injuries but no deaths.

"Umm Qasr is a city similar to Southampton," UK defence minister Geoff Hoon said in The Commons yesterday.

"He's either never been to Southampton, or he's never been to Umm Qasr" says a British Squaddie patrolling Umm Qasr. Another soldier added: "There's no beer, no prostitutes and people are shooting at us. It's more like Portsmouth."

Excellent. True class.

i dont think its realistic to invade a whole country in such a short time (excepts France ;))

That is grossly unfair and extremely offensive...

Just thought Id add this

MoD spokesman has just said that they have recieved reports of reporters door-stepping families of soldiers that have been injured/killed in action

To be honest, if I was in that situation and had reporters on my doorstep cos my dad was in the Gulf Id be tempted to take a sledgehammer to the nosy gits

Wonder which paper they were working for?

Im just going to take a shot in the dark, and guess the Mirror?

*edit*

This isnt a rant against the Mirror, I have equal contempt for pretty much all the tabloids, it was simply a guess based on the current theme of reporting in the Mirror at the moment

Please don't assume its only Piers Morgan's rag who would invade someones privacy in that manner.
The mirror would be my #1 guess although I'd not put similar past any paper, "broadsheets" included.

UN Backs Renewed Iraq Oil-For-Food Plan

Source: Ceefax page 108

"The UN Security Council has voted unanimously in favour of a German proposal to reactivate Iraq's "oil-for-food" programme.

The move transfers authority for the assessing humanitarian needs from the Iraqi regime to UN chief Kofi Annan.

It will allow billions of pounds of Iraqi oil revenues to be spent on food and medicines for the Iraqi people.

The programme was suspended on March 17 when UN administrators left Iraq".

So looks like we were right about the UN taking control of Iraq's oil and not the US.
