US forces report that B-52 bombers have used a new version of a cluster bomb against an Iraqi tank column in central Iraq; the weapon adapts to wind and weather to hit targets more accurately

The new bombs are referred to "smart-guided cluster bombs." After they are dropped, they open up in the air and disperse bomblets by parachute. The bomblet packages are designed to land more precisely on intended target areas.

The inexpensive tail kit inertially steers the munition from a known release point to precise target coordinates while compensating for launch transients, winds aloft, surface winds and adverse weather.

The kit can be fitted to CBU-87 CEM [Combined Effects Munition], CBU-89 GATOR and CBU-97 SFW [Sensor Fuzed Weapon]. The weapon will use inertial guidance only (no GPS). The WCMD program develops a tail kit for these inventory dispenser weapons. These weapons will be capable of delivery from medium to high altitude delivery when equipped with a WCMD kit. The WCMD weapon will correct for wind effects and errors during the weapon's ballistic fall. The WCMD kit will turn these "dumb" bombs into accurate "smart" weapons. Currently, the dispenser is achieving an accuracy of within 30 feet. Both fighter and bomber aircraft will be able to employ WCMD from a wide range of altitudes, in adverse weather, using various tactics such as level, dive, and toss bombing, and bombing on coordinates.

cluster bombs are evil. over 1400 kuwaitieskilled AFTER liberation.

do these new bomblets include transmitters for easy clean up?
do they have 0% failure rate, so not left as a land mine?
any of the 28million leaflets include instructions for children no to play with unexploded munitions?

around 100 civilians have been killed in iraq by these so far, more like these brothers will follow.
Five Albanian Kosovar brothers were killed and at least two other children injured when one of the boys tried to pry open an unexploded cluster bomblet that looked like a toy in Doganovic, about 30 miles south of Pristina. The five Hoxha boys, Edon, 3, Fisnik, 9, Osman, 13, Burim, 14, and Valdet, 15, were buried in the local cemetery within hours. A Los Angeles Times reporter found evidence that the bomb was a CBU-87. Besnik Hoxha, 14, and his brother Ardijen, 2, suffered shrapnel injuries even though they were at least 20 meters (yards) from their five cousins.
An hour after the boys were killed, shrapnel killed six-year-old Orta Lugici when small bombs fell on the ethnic Albanian village of Velika Dobranja, about 12 miles south of Pristina. The bombs also destroyed a tractor.(53)

I think the regime are getting scared,

They have just banned Al-Jazeera from reporting in Baghdad, wonder could have prompted this?

Also reports are that some of the Republican Guard are moving out of Baghdad towards the US forces, which can only be a good thing!

From the Telegraph ?
"Do you know anything about the local Ba'ath Party members?" came the bluff question from the British intelligence officer.

"No, sir, there are no Ba'ath Party members here."

"Do you know," asked the officer, "that unless Ba'ath Party members start working for us, we'll take it that they are working against us and we'll have them shot?'

"I see," said the Iraqi, taking drags on his cigarette. "Now I think about it, I do remember something."

There are unconfimed reports that Coalition forces are as little as 10 miles from Baghdad. Now a F/A-18 Hornet has been downed near Karbala and SAR cannot locate the pilot. Developing - Fox News broadcast

Washington Post

A U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter was shot down in southern Iraq Wednesday, killing seven of the 11 soldiers aboard, Pentagon officials said.

The helicopter was downed by small-arms fire near Karbala, the site of fierce fighting between the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and Iraqi troops, including Republican Guard forces.

Where is the RG

With reports that two RG divisions have been effectively destroyed by air and artillary bombardment. The Medina and Baghdad divisions. That leaves the approaches to Baghdad open.

There is a question rising into the minds of those forces that are moving forward, and that is: are we being drawn into a trap?
They're not encountering significant resistance, and there is some anxiety as they go deeper into the so-called red zone - the zone around Baghdad inside which its thought the regime might use chemical weapons.

Baghdad :: Rageh Omaar :: 0736 GMT
I simply don't know and cannot add up where these reports of big Republican Guard divisions are.
I find it extraordinary to believe they would be heading south, out into the open, to meet this advancing 3rd Infantry division. It's something that every single senior Iraqi official - who keep speaking to us on a daily basis - says they will not do.
But where are they? I've travelled north, south and west through this city. The American soldiers are knocking on the door. You go to the gates of Baghdad - the main arterial routes - and you find nothing. Where are the tanks, where are the check points?
You do find little pockets of soldiers, not just regular troops, but Baath party militia, secreted into shops, cafeterias, into the neighbourhood. This to me is going to be much more a picture of what the Iraqi leadership has in mind.

Marines are moving in to take Baghdad Airport.
The airport is SW of the city which is on the 3ID axis of approach whereas the 1MEF is approaching from the SE.

Indeed, the reports of lack of significant resistance is worrying,

Maybe the RG have been made aware of a plan to use possible NBC weapons so are staying well away? Or possibly they have crumbled and have gone back to their homes..

The next few days will be very interesting

*edit*

Is there any news on the status of the 4ID, because they could make quite an impact, coming in fresh and probably raring to go.

The first ships started to unload on Tuesday but it will be a while, days maybe weeks, before the whole division could be deployed. Whether smaller units could be deployed in a piecemeal fashion is unknown.

BREAKING NEWS - US Forces Preparing To Take Baghdad Airport

US forces are now 6 miles from Baghdad and are preparing to take the cities main airport.

Troops advancing on the Iraqi capital are reported to have encountered little resistence but one attack by Saddam Hussein's troops was caught live on television.

"Coalition forces at this point are outside of the Baghdad airport and are positioning themselves to engage that fight at a time of our choice," US military spokesman Captain Frank Thorp said.

Baghdad's Saddam International Airport is about 12 miles southwest of the centre of the sprawling city.

Members of Saddam Hussein's elite Republican Guard were earlier reported to have been seen leaving Baghdad and heading south. They were also said to be reinforcing positions around the Iraqi capital's airport.

Sky News Broadcast:

They are reporting a British Military spokesman as denying that the British are using cluster munitions in the Basra area cos of worries of collateral damage.

Latest from AFP:

US-led troops advancing on Baghdad moved near the Iraqi capital's airport, US military officials said.

"I can confirm they're outside the airport," said Major Randi Steffy, a spokeswoman for the US Central Command in Qatar.

Reuters:

Their reporter is reporting explosions in the vicinity of the airport
