Starting swimming, any advice?

Garmin tri band if your desperate for accuracy for HRM in swimming. Otherwise just use a genric formula. 6

Its the only one i have tried that doesnt slide down your chest without a wet/tri suit on.

Heavily short sighted here, plan is to get to the gym very early in the morn, do a swim and then head to work, but I can't see the massive clock they have on the wall xD So was just going to get a water resistant watch but realised it would be good to see how many calories i'm burning during a swim session so I can push myself next time to beat it, I used to love swimming and i'm naturally a strong swimmer despite my large (fat) size

Currently downloaded a step counter app on my phone to help count my steps and give a rough calories burnt.

I will beat my target of a 10st loss, only 9.5st to go D:

10st ouch. I'm not much more than that.

Swimming is perfect, for starting a weight loss journey.

The downside is it always makes you hungry after ALWAYS the best way to counteract this is to drink a bottle of water after straight away, start as soon as you get out of the pool.

swimming goggles with a head up display ...

https://www.watchgeneration.fr/spor...e-augmentee-sur-des-lunettes-de-natation-8581

The FORM start-up founded by former swimmer Dan Eisenhardt has just launched the marketing of Swim Goggles , connected-screen swimming goggles, which would be almost confused with a classic pair . Thanks to the augmented reality exploited on a screen integrated into the lenses of the glasses, they provide precious measures to the user without obstructing his vision.

On the GTN youtube they had a review and was highly rated. Have to say its a cool idea but its probably for all these young uns who are not long sighted :)

Guess i will have to stick to the watch and holding that as far as i can from face to read it :)

I'll have to do some research ... but does it put the image at infinity ... like I thought car displays do ?
but - if it was showing, time averaged, heart rate that would be good ... that's if the strap could communicate with it
Whats happened to reality enhanced glasses .. and the glassholes revolution

Any fans of aquasphere eagle goggles ? .. have recently had some leaks so considering trying a new brand of prescriptions

I just put up with it in swimming thesedays, gave up on prescription lens stuff as the sealing was cack.

Cracking open water swim last night 2k in 38mins (not quick) but only left zone 1 in hrm for a blip at the start :)

Pretty good that's 1.56/100m. I'd be happy with that.

So I'm half thinking of giving up, I'm struggling to do 400m in 2min/100m.

I seem to have peaked. I've only been doing swimming for a year and have taken quite a few weeks off yet quite a few weeks I've been going in several times. I've only given up smoking last week for vaping so I'm pretty sure that's been a major hurdle, I.e lack of oxygen really tires your muscles etc so maybe I'll see improvements now but otherwise it's the same old thing, arms start to get tired at around 150m and breathing gets pretty tough also.

I'd ultimately like to be able to swim 800m in sub 1.40/100 and 100m in 1.20. It's really tough knowing where to go next, I'm athletic and competitive and did a lot of track at a good standard in school so I should have the ability, I really need pro lessons I think.

Where do I go next, just keep plugging away for another year and hope there's a magically speed increase?

Swimming is 20% fitness 80% Technique, Anyone can swim like yourself but swimming for any length of times can destroy the even the fittest of people.

By the sounds of it your just pushing through the lengths without any focus apart from pushing through the lengths. You are better off doing 25-50m focusing on technique and resting till your ready to go again. Than just churning out lengths with bad technique.

If your pool has a pull boy (the thing between your legs) use if for 50m then do 25 without, rest then the 25back, do this 3 or times focusing on your breathing and hand entry. This is not about speed that will come very easy once you have cracked the hand entry and breathing. Get a book called swimsmooth loads of them second hand for next to nothing on the forest, or book 5 lessons better still join a club, the coaches will spot everything wrong very easily within the first session then its just down to you sucking up all there thoughts like a sponge. Personally i love it when a coach picks something out i am doing wrong or improve on. Videos and books work very little with me i am afraid. So slow down and keep at it, focus on technique not distance.

(do not be fooled by my time really, swimming in a wetsuit is superman compared to a pool)

yes I need to convince my pool to have some period with a video camera so you yourself could see what your technique is like.

I never bought any of the swimming power bands to try and improve strength and technique at home, through lack of an obvious means of attachment,
but still in the back of my mind.

once you have cracked the hand entry
I should probably read up, usually just experiment while swimming with minimising resistance/noise as you put your hand in, and I suspect it is assymetric too,
the noisy effectively slapping straight arm technique I see some of the powerful folk use is not very asthetic ... if they could see/hear themselves.

I am a bit hesistant on goggles that have silicon, as opposed to tpe skirts, which have sealed better for me .. think I may have a bit of an allergy too.
I have gone off the eagle ones .. they have silicone skirts, but I like the idea of no panda eyes, or nose bridge mark.

I coincidentally have usually drunk a litre or so of tea, pre regular 2k swim and with that have found no real need to take drinks to the pool, or massively rehydrate after,
I had found I was usually ~110bpm, so maybe lower fluid loss.

Its more the salts you need really after a session (same as anytime you sweat after exercise), google ORS I generally take half teaspoon of salt, honey and some acid (lemon/lime) into half a small cycling bottle give it a shake and down it.

Also your HR in a pool is usually lower than any other exercise, simply down to the water pressure on your body, a general rule of thumb is add 10% so it looks like your in the the fat burning zone. Good stuff !!!

Pool slappers are either doing a drill or just bad swimmers, Power only lasts so long in a pool :)

So stick at it if you want to improve then drills is the way. Otherwise just enjoy the feeling of swimming no matter how bad it seems.

Swam 1k in the pool this morning :D

Started at the beginning of July only being able to do 100m before I was done. Had about 2 full weeks off in that time but pretty much incremented evenly up to 600m or so then last week managed 800 and today 1000. Wasn't done either I had got into a lovely rhythm where it felt like I could have just kept going.

So chuffed as now I'm not quite so worried about drowning in my tri swim in 3 weeks time :p

A little, more mental that you are following someones bubbles, but then if they slow down your in goggle kicking territory and it always happens when you need a breath :)
