State of RT today. Is it usuable?

It all depends on games.

I don't want to play CP2077 without RT, so decided to go for 2080S. Otherwise I would've waited. I doubt RTX3080 will be released before next summer, so if I had to get RT I might as well do it now. There is more releases in the spring that I would want to check out.

But technology looks great.
It will likely not going to be a pleasant experience performance wise playin CP2077 with RT on anything lesser than a 2080ti. Would be better to wait for next gen RTX before playing CP2077, as with the GPU on 7nm it wouldn't be unlikely for a 70 or 80 card to have as many or more RT cores comparing to the 2080ti.

Playing CP2077 with RT on the 2080s would probably be about as pleasant as playing Crysis on GTX275 back then...

Just set the resolution to 240p, solved it for you. :)

I am 99% sure it will come out before Cyberpunk 2077. The RT on the 3000 series will likely be much better too. My guess is the 3070 will have better RT performance than a 2080Ti.
Well, it's a guess for everybody. We'll see in the end who guessed it right

I said it would, but I'm going to re-evalute, sorry, there won't be a 3000 series on CP 2077release!!!

The 3000 series however will release 3 months later just in time for when RT support is eventually patched in!!!:D

Patched in? Cyberpunk already has Ray Tracing - the devs had said as much and released rayvtraced screenshots - there is no patching it’s done

That's thet spirit but...

Screenshots!

SOTTR RTX was showcased playable live @Turing launch, meanwhile RT screenshots of CP 2077 RT...:p

I really hope your right but I went through similar enthusiasm with Mantle support like I have with RTX support so it's dampened now.

But mantle has a legacy. Vulkan.
I know, Mantle brought about/pushed on everything, but you learned to wait for support to be patched in more often than not is my point regardless what Nv/devs imply what your getting at launch for pre-orders be it publisher or NV bundling with new GPU sales.

New wolf game had RTX branding all over it months ago with working RTX via screenies/gameplay builds and it didn't launch RTX ready, it needs patched in, as did BF5/SOTTR, Metro is the only RTX launched title I think.

Again as a Turing user, hoping 2077 launches RTX ready but as above learned to live with it.

Otherwise, I'll buy it when it's RTX ready if it doesn't and probably get it cheaper due to games generally dropping in price over time.

Problem is a lot of games the impact from ray tracing features just isn't worth it - BF V even takes much of the hit of wider use of path tracing just to do reflections as just to do reflections means having quite a bit of the full implementation active of more complete ray tracing features.

Just replacing the odd traditional lighting technique but producing slightly nicer versions of the same result doesn't do ray tracing justice at all especially with the performance hit compared to what it is capable of doing for a game.

Does cyberpunk require raytracing to be enjoyable and look stunning I doubt it, going by what we have seen so far.

Does Metro require ray tracing? No, but once you turn it on you will not turn it off again.
It's like a drug, once you go RT, you never look back

Early access game Bright Memory now supported ray tracing.

Wow ray tracing reflection looked absolutely beautiful.

a) the video was of really crap quality even at 1080p 60fps on a 70mbit true fibre line. Isn't there any better, or the RTX2080Ti died in the process of trying to render it? :p
b) half the games on the list do not have ray tracing, many of which aren't confirmed if they will ever get it. And one (Youngblood) kinda pointless to have it given how **** and short the game is. But well. Lets hope people having RTX cards can get it.

This has been done to death now but my simply answer is Yes. It's no way a marketing gimmick but it is very early days for the technology. I prefer to call it a taster of RT. Nvidia are of course marketing the hell out of it by why not? That's what all companies do if they have a huge competitive advantage in something. Not only does no other company reach the performance levels of NV's top end, they also don't have RT. I think people understate the achievement of the 2080 Ti especially.

There are too many cogs in motion atm, and the issue is the denial of the consumers and early adopters.
And the cogs are many that only bullet point presentation of the data is applicable.

a) Next round of consoles would support AMD hybrid RT solution. MS console would use it under the DX12.1 DXR. Is unknown atm what API Sony PS5 will use, sticking to Gnm & Gnmx or go DX12 or Vulkan.

b) MS is pushing hard for it's Xbox platform on PC and everything new we would see there are going to be the actual game run native from Xbox, with more exclusives.
(Already are rumours that MS is pulling an "Epic" here giving bigger cut to the companies than Steam)

c) Which leads to all those DXR games would have heavy AMD optimizations. Good example what that means is Forza 4 and GoW and to lesser extend BF5.

d) There are not going to be companies sending their game to Nvidia waiting 6 months for Ray Tracing to be implement it, like it is happening right now. Except if consumers are willing to wait 6 months for Nvidia custom ray tracing implementation, while AMD & consoles have it months before.

e) There has been no DX12.1 DXR games yet. All current RT games using Nvidia proprietary solution. So we do not know how Nvidia cards would perform with DXR API yet. Especially when the code would be optimized for AMD hybrid RT. And given the complexity there won't be custom made Nvidia tailored games. (see (d) above).
