Steam IS coming to OS X

Great, now I can play games on my mac.... hang on none of the ones I have are available on this platform

D'OH :-/

(except portal of course)

Oh I wish more were available on mac...

I know TF2 hasn't been released yet but although I bought The Orange Box, when I go to my list of games they're all listed except for TF2

It seems that not all "Steam Play" games are available on mac. Civ: IV is a "Steam Play" game on their store but if you purchased it before the 12th May 2010 then you can't play it without buying it again - see here, apparently this is due to 2K - more info here.

Just dug out my Half-Life Blueshift CD and stuck in the serial code, it's downloading the first Half-Life and Opposing Force too for some reason

Haven't played this for bloody years.

Yeah, I just noticed it says 'Half-Life is not available on your platform', but it's downloading it

Ah it's not available yet. Fail. :o

Thought id post back after a day of steam on my mac!

IT'S THE BEST THING EVER!!!!! :D

Portal on the 9400 card is good enough to play at 1440x900 which is awesome and on the 9600 is THE BEST THING!! (cant wait for more things to be released now that can take advantage of the pretty good performance now).

Caved and got civ4 for the 3rd time too (the deal combination for it all was worth it, though if i pre-ordered 5 i could have had 75% off apparently). Performance is pretty much like in windows too thankfully :) When you get it on mac theres 2 of all the civ package, one mac and one windows version (dont need the windows versions so i might palm them off to people or something) hopefully the port of the beyond the sword upgrade isnt too bad too

Previous PC Owners of Civilization IV Games on Steam Get Mac Version
Announcement - Valve
Yesterday when we shipped Steam on the Mac, previous owners of the PC Steam version of Sid Meier's Civilization IV, Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword, Civilization IV: Warlords, Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization, or Sid Meier's Civilization IV: The Complete Edition did not have access to their games when logging in on a Mac.

But as of now, upon logging into Steam, those owners will have access to the Mac version of their games, right in their Steam library.

Does this affect you?

I've found a pretty embarrassing bug.

Let me explain;

On the PC I've always chosen to do a manual backup (i.e. backing up everything in the steam content folder), so when it comes to reinstalling you simply drag the .gcf files back in to the steam content folder and it's all magically there.

However, there is also a wizard backup utility that will guide you through making an extractable backup file that you simply double click to restore your games etc.

Now.. if you click "Backup or Restore games..." with an empty games list you get "No games currently installed". It doesn't even give you an option to restore from a file. The kicker is that the backup file Steam generates is a unix command, which you manually have to tell OS X to run with Steam.

I'll stick to my manual backup method :p

While we're on booboos, someone at Valve needs a prod and reminder that this is a Mac app, not an iPhone one. Look at Steam's icon, complete with regulation iPhone gloss.

The UI in general is pretty ropey as a Mac app, but it's still obviously a net positive that they've made their stuff available!

Nope as i always got it on cd/dvd before hand....

Turns out since i installed all the add ons the game won't launch at all  all i get is my steam friends thing going green for a sec then it goes back to blue stating im not running a game! Cant say im at all impressed with this as i got the bts expansion to run for a bit but all the leader heads were mucked up...

Will look into a fix on saturday as im travelling back to england today but iv got a feeling its either to do with aspyer being shoddy or i just need to reinstall it all (9gig too )

On the plus portal works fine so everything that appears on the source engine should be pretty good over the next few weeks

Is there any way to resize the steam dock icon, it's so big and just sticks out like a sore thumb!

Also, anyone notice that steam uses a lot of processing? My CPU is ranging 5-10% the whole time with it open.

guys, have a look at your portals...the latest update seems to have made our portals look like black holes...you can't see the other side of the portal! :o

Trying to play Torchlight with steam but when I boot it keeps saying:

'Fatal Error: Steam must be running to play this game (SteamAPI_Init() failed)'

I have steam open, and i'm launching the game from Steam..

Any ideas?

Any one having problems with the Steam app... i download, transfer to apps, open it... Downloads some stuff, finishes and then hangs (which I have to force quit to get rid of)

Any help ? or solutions ?

Never mind... Sorted it... I think its because I am on the University network, will try at home tonight and report back
