@ManCave
I'm looking to get a Steam Machine,
Moving away from PS5 Pro, due to Sony Crap they are pulling (Age verification in insecure ways, Slow at fixing bugs, Missiong KB/Mouse games)

Currently using a Steam Deck hooked up to my 5K monitor & for some games its perfect for others It struggles at 1080p

So looking for help To spec out a Custom Hardware Configuration That can match or Beat The Steam Machine with 2TB at £1200 (-£70 for OCUK to build)

Requirements
  • 5K support (60hz is fine) Do not need to game at 5K But higher the better (5k = 5120x2160) Deck can scroll steam os any 5K no issue
  • must have 2TB to Match Steam Machine
  • This will be Indie / AA Gaming Rig Not expecting AAA at 5K. But 1080p be nice
  • Must Support Steam OS (AMD) only

  • Games playing
    • Stardew Valley < deck plays at 5K
    • Euro Truck Sim -< Deck Struggles
    • Schedule 1 <- Deck Struggles
    • Fields of Minstra < deck plays at 5k
    • Colverpit < deck struggles at 720p
    • Restory < deck can manage 800p
    • Sim games would be nice (Planet Coaster such)

I was thinking about this over weekend and have seen a post by @Tetras in another thread and I think that's a good build/spec, even includes 2TB storage. But have dropped RAM capacity and GPU down to fit your budget. I was originally going to suggest a 8000 model APU based build, but seeing his post and budget including the 7600x I think this would give options to upgrade later on to better CPU and GPU.

The only thing I would probably think needs changing further would be to find a smaller case, which might mean change of motherboard.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,276.80 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Hi, yeah I think that's a decent build. But I was checking the motherboard documentation and it doesn't look like that specific memory kit is listed as known tested/supported. It would likely work fine, they just don't have it listed.

PVVR516G600C36K isn't listed: https://asrock.com/mb/AMD/B850M-X WiFi R2.0/index.asp#MemoryGNR
thanks for highlighting as I'm getting OCUk to build it my own speed will inform them / they can verify

thanks @Grim5 , certainly something to think about, did consider 7600 but didn't consider 5600 but seem wrong going with 5000 series now, for a £100 saving for around 30% perf loss
im not on a tight budget technically unlimited, but was to spend where performance makes sense, 7600 -> 9600 Is £10 5000 series bit cheaper due to DDR4 for sure, but might regret it later...

I do like much lower TDP for this smaller case too 65 vs 110w

did look though
5500x-16gb-am4-mobo 1228
edit
9600 - 16gb - am5 - 1495

Seriously @Grim5 you got me seriously reconsidering the entire bulid, As ill be gaming at 5 posiibly 5600/9070Xt combo might be possible, Cpu much less required

With £600 for a 9070, I'd be paying the touch extra for the 9070 XT. Only £60 more for the same card in XT form.

I don't think I'd go AM4 for lack of future proofing for the minimal cost saving. The DDR5 prices will eventually fall, and DDR4 has gone up, too.

yeh tempted, for me its the power, Small case, want quieter build but not would allow me to leverage 5K more likely for £60

Latest spec looks good. As mentioned by @aaronyuri I would agree, if you can fit it in, it's worth going for the 9070xt card. You will always have options to update CPU or upgrade RAM at later date if (hopefully) the prices relax a bit.

I'm interested in this as well, I want to get some spare parts together over the next 12 months as I will be building one for multi plat in the living room if Sony want to get rid of physical. I will undoubtedly get a ps6 for exclusives but average games I used to buy and sell will be had a lot cheaper on Steam or possibly game pass.

My only concern is startup and shutdown. Is there any way to make that happen with controller or a mini keyboard remotely, I will probably go dual boot with windows and steam os. Will be a good partner to my steam deck and office pc but would like it to be a console centric as possible

You can get Bluetooth startup dongles a remote button can remotely hit power button
HDMI cec dongles for this

Just been speaking to my wife and I have been allowed to spend some money from the business on a steam machine build. She gets some then to spend on skiing :-) win win.

Ideally wanted the build to come in at around £1200 but currently a fair bit over. Anyone know if OC will give any discounts ? Must have spent over £5k with them in last 2 years. Looking around I see I can get a 7700X for about £170 so that would bring things closer and doubt I really need it for living room. Not sure there is much else I can compromise on.
