Steam Machine (OS) Build

It is tax deductible so I'd go crazy, personally. The 9070 XT is the card to buy for 5k resolution without spending big money.
Yeah I have a 9070XT in my Desktop, was just hoping to not spend as much on this, deliberating a GRE or just standard 9070 but don't want to creep up too much. Will be a dual boot and have a spare 512GB SSD for OS

I'm looking to get a Steam Machine,
Moving away from PS5 Pro, due to Sony Crap they are pulling (Age verification in insecure ways, Slow at fixing bugs, Missiong KB/Mouse games)

Currently using a Steam Deck hooked up to my 5K monitor & for some games its perfect for others It struggles at 1080p

So looking for help To spec out a Custom Hardware Configuration That can match or Beat The Steam Machine with 2TB at £1200 (-£70 for OCUK to build)

Requirements
  • 5K support (60hz is fine) Do not need to game at 5K But higher the better (5k = 5120x2160) Deck can scroll steam os any 5K no issue
  • must have 2TB to Match Steam Machine
  • This will be Indie / AA Gaming Rig Not expecting AAA at 5K. But 1080p be nice
  • Must Support Steam OS (AMD) only

  • Games playing
    • Stardew Valley < deck plays at 5K
    • Euro Truck Sim -< Deck Struggles
    • Schedule 1 <- Deck Struggles
    • Fields of Minstra < deck plays at 5k
    • Colverpit < deck struggles at 720p
    • Restory < deck can manage 800p
    • Sim games would be nice (Planet Coaster such)
Have you built yours yet ? Just interested to know how you are getting on, pretty much ready to pull the trigger but just wondered how it went.

Yes, asked on Thursday, it was in stress testing, I suggested maybe delivery would be mid this week and tended to agree if stress testing goes well

Ordered my parts, couldnt order from OC as I couldn't login to site and was not getting a renew password. Got a 7800X3D, 9070 sapphire pure, 2Tb ssd + 512Gb for os, 16GB ram and a Lian Li a3. Exciting

Why the 7800x3d?

It’s a good chip, but there was a video recently from jayztwocebts showing 7800x3d can be beat for cheaper now

Either way good spec! Enjoy

If SteamOS doesn't do the job for you then check out Bazzite. I don't know all the ins and outs but Bazzite is supposed to be a bit more flexible with hardware than SteamOS. They both do the same job however so if SteamOS works then carry on...

I’m aware, I’m a certified in Linux support and development if SteamOS doesn’t work I’ll be going to cachyos

Honestly I had a 7600x in my basket but would like this build to last 4 years or so, with maybe one GPU change so figured for the extra 100 it was worth going 8 cores and 3d. I have a 9800x3d in my desktop and have been very impressed with it.

Only building one due to Sony dropping physical so I will start migrating any games that are no longer disk based to the steam machine, then eventually only exclusives will be bought in Sony's machines.

Doing simlair I moved from pc to console as I used to tweak so much I didn’t game

If I can tweak I will, but now console is doing crappy stuck moving back

Always wanted to get rid of windows for gaming now is the time

My case and CPU have arrived, bizarrely the case which was ordered from the rainforest was actually fulfilled by OC so at least they'll get some of the cash, I just couldn't order due to the new site but login details finally arrived that's morning.

Cancelled my pure as seller didn't look great so ended up with another nitro + but the non xt version.

Really like the look of the Lian Li A3 case, will go lovely in my living room.

Kit all arrived but power supply was advertised as having 4 pcie is in fact 2 with daisy chain, ideal anyway as changed my card to a nitro so need the 12v power port so that I don't have to use the adapter. Not much room in this case with the nitro in it.

New PSU arrives tomorrow.

On a separate note ( will look this up but just in case someone knows) going to partition 512 SSD into 2, install windows on one for game pass then partition the 2tb into 2 1gb partitions. I think I can format one to btfrs and possibly share my steam library between both os?

I’ve got over a TB of games in a queue overnight

But tried evil west 5k epic no fsr was getting 58fps added fsr quality up 100+

It seems RDR2 might be broke atm though seems they did an update a day or so ago now people reporting rockstar installer issues…

Happy to share pictures if interested

Setup SteamOS 43 seconds to install end to end!

Just works no fiddling needed

Tried euro truck at 5k ultra 100fps at 50c GPU

Ram usage was amazing fresh windows with this setup would be using 22gb ram SteamOS is using 5.6GB in game on desktop 1.6GB
I think I must be missing something, but how did you get OcUK to do a custom build using a Lian Li A3 case / mATX ? On the website, all I can see are options for larger cases etc.

Either call them , email or use the support ticket option with your list of components for a quote.
