Steamguard, absolute garbage

Posts like this are so useless. What if the code doesn't even arrive? What if the code that arrives is outdated? What if it constantly arrives every time you use steam?

You need to update your Steam properly and change to an email host that actually delivers your mail on time. Try deleting clientregistry.blob.

Been using it since it was announced in beta. Only had codes when I should expect them and instantly, and they've always worked. I'm finding it odd that so many people have issues with it, when lots are also having a flawless experience. Hopefully it's just an update that got botched, not some compatibility thing.

What if you don't have an email account on the PC your are installing on, like one being used as a dedicated games/media machine?

yeah, the system is far from perfect.

I've had a steam account for a while and I've just noticed it now say that it's protected by steam guard, I've never had to enter any number.

What happens next time I try to install steam without a code?

the code gets sent to your email when u need to enter it

or u can just disable it if you prefer

Write code down on piece of paper, traverse room, read piece of paper, enter code.

what is this "paper" you speak of?

Also wtf why would you not be able to access your email account on a machine capable of running steam?

you've got the internet, and you've clearly got a browser....

maybe I'm just too used to dealing with old people but it seriously sounds like you're saying you think email accounts are specific to a pc like a postal address to a house?

Tried to log in to web steam from a laptop this morning. Steam guard kicked in and claimed it emailed me.

Some 11 hours later, still no email. Nothing in Junk mail. Checked in Steam on my main PC and the registered email address is as I thought it was.
Just as well I didn't really need to do anything (had been planning on ordering Mass Effect in the sale).

Steam guard now disabled, what an absolute load of rubbish.

<sarcasm>User error, it's fine for Joe Bloggs so it must be for you.</sarcasm>

The sad thing is with the value of Steam accounts these days it makes sense as a feature, just there is clearly something amiss with the implementation (their CAPTCHAs are a pain in the arse sometimes as well).

Evilsod, try deleting your .blob file and when steam logs back in, Steam, Settings, Beta Participation, download the new beta

This will force it to get the very latest files (I always run the beta without any problems)

Did you try to resend the code before QQ?

Also, for people having problems, have any of you told Valve about this? They aren't going to know there's a problem if everyone simply has a problem and disables it.

Meh, its not done it for a while now so i've not bothered.

Oddly enough though gfs brother was logging onto here yesterday. He's been upgrading his pc lately and apparently hasn't had to bother with Steamguard at alll, despite changing several major components. So it kicked in when he came here.
First time he logged, the code sent didn't work. Tried twice more and received no new email. So i logged in and quit. Then he tried again and got another code which worked fine. It does seem really temperamental...
