Steve Jobs has died. What effect, if any, will it have on Apple and the tech industry?

From the pictures i'm seeing on the net of people leaving candles, flowers etc.. i'm beginning to think this is going to have a huge effect, he was apple!

Now we have a boring bloke running the show, don't get me wrong he has done amazing things for apple but i really think Jony Ive should have took over.

A cult without a leader!!

When are cults ever good...

Although apple have a cult following, unlike other cult things. The number of cult users is tiny compared to their actual Market.

Maybe so, of course numbers arent always relevant, not that im trying to compare (at all...), but a few naughty middle-eastern people are still annoying the most advanced armies on the planet ;).

I have when they 1st came out when I was asked to look for new phones for the office I hated it Icons were whay too large and unecessary & found the touch screen wasn't as responsive as my brothers android.

Oh you'd be surprised according to some of these users we should be using mac products for everything as they're easier to use
The majority of Windows Mob Devs have jumped to Android, this I would say is the main reason why Android will win in the end, because it is a far more open system that allows you to integrate with it more easily (a lot more easily than win mob sdk's from what I have played with). My opinion anyway, and Im sure people would say no, you're wrong.

How is that even comparable or relevant?

Apple has a user base in millions. Yet on launch day you get several thousand at turn outs. It's a tiny percentage that are the nutter cult culture.
The lose of Jobs for almost the entire user base, makes no difference at all.

But your talking about out of date sofware.

W8 is a Market changer. Things are a doodle to make for w8. It depends on the price range. But I fully expect w7p and w8/w8p to make huge in roads into androids Market share.
It's a far superior package especially for the general population.

Well WinPhone7 has yet to take the big jump into consumer's hands as it was envisioned when it was announced. On the flip side Android has increased massively every year for the last few years and continues to do so with no sign of slowing down. Nokia are almost completely out of the picture and I can't imagine them hanging around any longer if they take their sweet time with WinP devices

Not really.
It was behind the competitors in terms of function. Mango update has rectified that and more or less on par.
There's also been a lack of hardware. That will be sorted in the coming month with both the samsung and galaxy deals. It's also got the hindrance of no tablets. Many people will want the same OS across all devices. Something android hasn't done. So that will be another incentive at the end of 2012. It isn't going to change over night. But long run I expect windows to be at least on par with android (depending on price point)
Or if it stays on expensive hardware only. To be around iPhone levels.

It's like saying android failed. As when it first came out it was abysmal compared to iOS. But it quickly got unto speed. W7 is new, android had the exact same problems in the early days.

The one major saving grace for Windows Phone would be integration with the PC.

Android already does this via the browser and the massive amounts of apps/addons that can talk to software already on the PC over wireless and over 3G which makes it quite unique in the kind of things you can do with a smartphone. Installing apps, sending text/links/phone numbers/nav directions directly to mapping software and so on back and forth without even having the phone in the same building is kind of useful and you wonder what you'd do without it once you've built your routine around such features :p

Yeah, but is sideloading for the consumer going to be a big ball ache on WP8 as well??

Such a sad loss to the computer/technology industry RIP. Hopefully Apple will continue to go from strength to strength and keep being innovative. We'll see I guess time will tell.

Innovation in the hands of the corporation as apposed to in the hands of the consumer?

Windows lost the phone market many years ago and they will never be able to regain lost consumers. It was there's for the taking and they screwed it up. Apple had it, and now they lost it to Android who are just absolutely dominating right now and going strength to strength. Samsung is the biggest manufacturer in the phone market by quite some distance.
Apple was on the down turn (in terms of market share and innovations) when it came to the phone market long before Jobs stepped down from CEO.

Apple isn't on the down though.
Total Market share for apple means nothing. They don't produce low or even middle priced products. They are top end only. That's far from down. Their customer base and profits continue to grow massively.

As for windows your wrong. They have scrapped windows mobile and actual produced a modern OS. They will gain marketshare. Nokia and samsung are expecting it.
