Steven Gerrard

Point is, it shouldn't be happening with the Brits, it's what should set us apart from the Spanish / Italian league.

It isn't just Gerrard, but he does get away with it more than others do.

What a rubbish thread,

Yes Gerrard proberly did change the refs mind but thats not his fault, countless other players would and have done the same thing (Lucas did for the 2nd pen) but if the ref cracked under the pressure or genuinely thought about it and changed his mind then thats not Gerrards fault.

I'm not saying it's just about this one incident, it's about him as a player.

Why is it a rubbish thread?

What are you opinions of him having many subpar performances in the last season and a half... and why he hasn't been playing well for England?

I've noticed Gerrard goes down on the grass for the slightest of things, it's really annoying. a lot of foreigners do it, and it's pretty much expected, but a proper English footballer shouldn't, you'd never see it from John Terry.

Its rubbish because you main point is that you don't like him complaining to the refs and trying to sway there decisions. If thats the case then why not create another thread about Rooney or Terry or Neville? and there's plenty more.

To say 'his performances for liverpool are always average' is just rubbish, he has been playing poor recently though.

The reason you've created this thread is because you support Utd and you've seen a slight excuse to have a pop at him.

BTW his free-kick was the winner vs Villa :)

Whether I support United or not I would have still posted this.

I suppose always average was a touch harsh. He does have good games at times, but more often than not its pretty normal (if thats the right word?).

Certainly the last year or so (perhaps since Liverpool won the CL) his performances have gone downhill.

You didn't answer my question, why not start a thread about Terry or Rooney chasing after the refs?

Since we won the CL he had possibly his best season scoring 23(?) goals in 05/06. Though he wasn't at his very best last season he was still very good and far better than most other players. He then started this season amazingly well but has struggled to come back from his injury but thats not going to last long.

Because whilst they may chase referees, I feel they are both solid performers for club and country.

Rooney has dry spells up front, sure but nobody can deny he's a fantastic player.

Terry does berate referees if he feels something doesn't go his teams way, and sure Rooney will chase a referee for half an hour if he feels he's made a bad decision but neither seem to have the referees in their pockets as much as Gerrard does in the Premiership anyway.

For some reason it just seems when ever Gerrard looks at a referee it goes his way

On the topic of not answering questions, you never answered my question about his string of poor performances for England?

edit:
I don't count scoring 23 goals as a great season to be truely honest.
Gerrard takes freekicks and pens... and does score some cracking long range efforts. But to be fair you can still be a poor performer and just bang in the odd freekick to get 23 goals.

Rooney a solid performer for England? He didn't do jack **** for three years and only recently discovered where the goal was. He also contributed very little to the team in that time, other than getting sent off, and were it not for the form of Lampard he would've got a lot more criticism for his awful performances.

lol You did not start this thread to talk about Gerrard's performances, you started it to complain about him berrating officials which he is no worse than many other players.

To say that Rooney is a solid performer for club and country (implying that Gerrard isn't) is a complete joke. Rooney has been one of Englands worst performers (if not the very worst) for a very long time and has hardly set the world alight since joining Utd, as you would put it he's just played 'normal'. In actual fact many Utd fans on here complained about him last season. Rooney has done nothing more than Gerrard has over the last couple of seasons and like i said earlier, the only reason you've started this thread is because you're a Utd fan and seen this as a chance to have a dig at Gerrard.

I pressume you accept that Gerrard isn't any worse than a lot of players in regards to hounding officials and if so its not his fault if the refs do go his way more than they do for others (and if you watched the Liverpool-Chelsea game this season you would have seen Terry have just a big of an effect on the ref), as he can't control that.

Regarding Gerrard's performances for England (which i don't particuarly care about, Liverpool comes way before England for me), he played poorly recently for England because he's been playing poorly in general. Prior to that he's either played out wide or as the holding midfielder where he's done the job asked of him but because of the restrictions of the roles he's been playing its been hard for him to do more. He's still been easily a better player for England than Rooney has though.

That season (and in most seasons) Gerrard was (and is) not our first choice penalty taker or free-kick taker (though he is taking a few more free-kicks now). That season Fowler, Cisse and Alonso all took pens before Gerrard did though im pretty sure he did score a couple when they weren't playing and i can't think of him scoring any free-kicks that season (im sure he got the odd 1 though).

When Rooney was playing for England under Sven though he was often stuck up there on his own up front. Rooney needs another player up there to play forward of him so he can drop off.

He was stuck in an unnatural position.

In Euro 2004 he scored 4 goals in three games before getting injured.

In the world cup he had only just come back from injury (broken metatarsal wasn't it?) and was struggling to find match fitness and fair enough, didn't score at all.

But I think he came back too early from his injury, perhaps due to media presure? There was an awful lot riding on him getting fit in time for the World Cup.

Need I remind you that Rooney is still only 21 years old?

Euro 2004 he was 17/18 playing for his Country, and would have been what... 19/20 when playing in a world cup as your countries main striker.

No no, I assure you this was a thread about Gerrard in general... it was mearly brought on by what I saw on the TV that provoked the thread :)

And yes, I do accept the fact that it's not only Gerrard that does it.

And yes... of course Gerrard isn't the only player who's had subpar performances for his country recently.

Dare I mention Michael (Sometimes you make me wonder why your worth so much) Owen, and Paul (I've just dropped another clanger) Robinson?

His age is irrelevant, you claimed that he's been a solid performer for club and country and he clearly hasn't been.

You also can't use injuries as the excuse for Rooney playing **** for England for 3 years and that he didn't play well in the WC because he was rushed back. You fail to remember that Gerrard was still injured while playing for England in the 2 qualifiers previous to the Estonia-Russia games.

Also Rooney only played the odd game up front on his own (1 or 2) so thats not an excuse. And its not like he didn't play part of last season playing up top on his own for Utd.

Which brings me back to my point, why not start a thread about Rooney?

He's been terrible for England for a very long time and is possibly the worst player in the league for abusing refs.

Because I'm of the opinion that Gerrard does it worse than Rooney, and Gerrard is also more overrated than Rooney - hence why it says Steven Gerrard as the thread title and not Wayne Rooney.

I could have made a thread about John Terry, but I don't think he's overrated... he argues with officials and tries to turn games around by doing so... (which really annoys me sometimes actually) but he also performs well on the pitch.

Nikebee it would help if your arguements were actually true, Rooney was not "often" stuck up front on his own at all, it happend at the world cup for 1 (or 2) games and maybe the odd qualifier. He was "often" stuck up there with Owen, and if Owen wasn't fit it would have been Crouch or Defoe. Rooney has played much, much worse than Gerrard for England since Euro 2004.

Stop talking rubbish.

edit: just to back up my point the starting forwards under sven after euro 2004 (when rooney played):

v Wales - Rooney + Owen
v Azerbajan - Rooney + Owen
v Spain - Rooney + Owen
v Holland - Rooney + Owen
v N Ireland - Rooney + Owen
v Azerbajan - Rooney + Owen
v Denmark - Rooney + Defoe
v Wales - Rooney
v N Ireland - Rooney + Owen
v Poland - Rooney + Owen
v Argentina - Rooney + Owen
v Uruguay - Rooney + Bent
v Sweden - Rooney + Owen
v Ecuador - Rooney
v Portugal - Rooney

So thats 3 times he played up front by himself between 2004 and 2006, and 12 times he had a striking partner.

Rooney has no excuses for playing poorly for England for that period of time.

Ronaldo is out Penalty and Free-Kick taker and he 'only' scored 23 goals last season. 10 for a Midfielder is excellent, 15 is phenomenal. 23 is unbelievable.

His performances for Liverpool are always average, with the odd moments of good play or a brilliant long range shot or freekick... For England he's nearly always sub-par though...

Surely I can't be the only one who's noticed this or feels this way??

Totally agree, the Boy is nothing more than a 'Carthorse' .......
