Stranger Things (Netflix)

Finished it the other night, enjoyed it overall. Didn't love the emphasis on body horror over good old creepy, but they did kick things off with a clip of one of the living dead movies & had an entire discussion about "The Thing" so not sure what I was expecting really. And yeah, sooo many plot holes. I'm willing to give something this silly a lot of leeway, but there were plenty of moments that just seemed careless rather than deliberate hand waving to keep things moving.
The die hard reference made me properly lol.
Did like it, just a bit less than the first two.

there are fantasy elements yes, thats the stuff we suspend our belief to, but the real world stuff - thats the stuff that needs to be realistic in order to give weight to the fantasy elements.
Its how writing works.

Book spoiler for the prequel "suspicious minds"
It's extremely unlikely to be 11's father as he was sent off to die when the scientist in charge realised 11's mother was pregnant (arranging to fix the draft lottery), and never knew about the baby as the scientist passed off most of the pregnancy symptoms as a side effect of the drugs he was making her take and she only discovered she was pregnant after his death.

Chances are nothing ;)
Either Coke & Nestle will have supplied them FOC (advertising!), or the props team will have made them up as it's not that hard a thing to do and something there are people and companies that will specialise in it, and many experienced props people will be used to making up basic replica packaging for period items as it's common (and these days with modern printers and DTP packaging never easier for boxes etc*)

Actually having had a look, it seems Coke in the US are doing a promotional package that includes "new coke" cans, so definitely a case of Coke providing them ;)

*Helped by the fact that much of the older packaging was very simple compared to today due to the limitations of the printing and production techniques back then.

It was rather emotional at the end, but no-one seems to have mentioned it was Dustin's girlfriend's fault that Billy and Hopper (perhaps) died! I'd be ****** with her! Slowing everything down to sing! She killed two people!
 
Re product placement:

Remember, Netflix shows are different to broadcast shows: normal TV uses its programming to sell adverts, but for Netflix the show is the advert (for the platform). A tie up with Coke or Burger King etc gets the Netflix name out into the world, beyond its ringfenced group of subscribers. I'd be surprised if any of these products paid Netflix anything - it's a mutually beneficial arrangement.

As for the show, I've just got Eps 7 and 8 to go. It's great! The only thing I miss, a little, is the lack of small-town life we've seen - it's all been pretty frenetic. But I guess they played that a lot in S1 and S2. And with it being the summer break, there's no school.

Hopper wouldn't of died as he was waiting outside the vault to get the keys at the time they were singing.
Billy on the other hand might of survived if Hopper and Joyce was able to get the key and turn the keys quick enough really.

Neither would have died (although this is what you said too...?) as Hopper would have turned the key before the crazy russian caught up with them and Billy wouldn't have been speared as the monster would be dead.
 
I enjoyed it, thought it was better than season 2.

I think they had to go a different direction and knew that the changes they made wouldn't sit right with everyone. I think Hopper's letter at the end was directed to those people as much as it was to El. It's very hard to maintain the creepy feeling of the first season. We know what the monsters are, we have seen them, we can't put them back in the box. Also, the kids of the first two seasons are almost gone. They are teenagers now and that changes the whole dynamic of the show.

There were plot loop holes of course and some silly scenes like the bone not going through the drain. But, I just watched the show and didn't get too hung up on the little things. And, don't forget some of "mistakes" weren't mistakes as such, just nods to different 80's movies.

The only parts that really bothered me were Wynona Ryder's Character and Will rubbing the back of his neck. It's like they didn't know what to with Joyce, the love interest for Hopper was a fail. The same could be said for Will, what was the point of him been able to sense the Mind Flayer, when he only seemed to know when everyone else knew anyway. I thought he was going to have some residue of the Flayer still in him and would be pivotal in defeating it. Nope, His sole contribution to the show was the hairs standing on the back of his neck.
 
Ok, final episode was wonderful!

Dustin's Neverending Story bit was just glorious! A real TV highlight.

Tempted to say this was the best season yet, though I did love the first so much too. Look forward to s4, though I guess it'll be an 18 month or so wait.
