MvC3 probably does require more skill than I gave it credit, but it's still completely devoid of links and the execution isn't that hard. 3 juggles can kill a team and win you a game and once a character is knocked out, the next coming in is at a pretty big disadvantage. It's taken seriously due to the pace, flashy/long combos and the fact its good to watch. Street Fighter isn't particularly flashy, or fast paced, or even that good to watch simply because there isn't a massive deal going on at any given second. What puts it on top though is the frame by frame methodicalness of each action either player makes, the execution required to effectively apply pressure, the very narrow windows for combos and framedata of block/recovery. While I know every fighter has most of that, none of them are as tight or precise as Street Fighter, all of the best/most effective offenses with each character requires surgical precision.
The fact that all of the games at EVO are Japanese except MK/Injustice and Street Fighter/KoF are the only games the Japanese take seriously is the way it is for a reason.
I believe in live & let live, and I'm glad that the other games are here for those who enjoy them, but lets not be math teachers and pretend we are scientists, people.
