Students = Cheap windows 7

But i'm a student. Paying £20 for the priviledge of having retail is one thing, but £25 is a lot of money. Hell that would pay for most of my drinks tonight :'(
Sell your retail version on eBay to claim back the £55 you paid for it; in fact you're bound to make some more than that, and then purchase the student version :)

The problem's then solved, right?

£25... a lot of money? What... ?

A few months ago it was nothing.

Couple however a very high cost of living at university, lower than expected loan and not a lot of financial assistance elsewhere and suddenly £25 isn't that little a sum of cash.

At least, not when one is buying an un necessary premium item.

Or blowing it on a night of drink :p

Hi, I seem to be getting the code 5 error as well when I try to boot from the DVD, I've used my normal method, NTI, that's worked before with pre-release versions of win7, and I've used the method through imgburn. I don't know what could be wrong..

Do a search for oscdimg.exe in this thread. There is guide on how to get a bootable DVD image using that method.

Hi, thanks for that, I've just booted to a RC1 version of win7 on the same PC but I've realised that the RC version was created from a pre-made iso, thus the problem could be in the process of creating the new iso. I'm going to try this http://www.unawave.de/windows-7-tipps/code5-error.html?lang=EN method first and see if that works, if not I'll try what you suggested. Just for my info can someone post up a picture of what files/folders the boot dvd contains..
Ta,
Chris

NB: I have got around this by installing RC1 first then the student version from within it, that suggests that the student DVD contains all the correct setup files so it must be in the making of the DVD from the iso. I'm still waiting for win7 to download, again, then I'll try the other method of creating the startup disc...

Well been using 7 Pro 64 bit for a a few hours now. My only experience was otherwise on my core duo laptop + ssd + 2gb RAM, since the beta and RC came out (so quite a lot). On my PC its running very well atm.

I am wondering. Has anyone who has purchased the 64-bit version used the key to activate a 32-bit version?

The theory being that should I manage to get the 32-bit media, I would be able to use the key I ordered on my netbook. Had it been Vista, I know that this would work for Full/Upgrade versions.

You would still need a second license - so why not just buy the 32bit version for your Netbook?

Seems to be a huge amount of confusion on this thread. Seems most people CANNOT get the key to work installing from a standard retail disk, but CAN get it to work using a disk created from the downloaded .exe. Is this correct? And if so you have to conclude that there is a difference in the actual disk images?

Cheers chriscatt, you got my copy working. If people are getting the code 5 error they need to download vlite and use the boot.dat in the program folder for the boot image when making an ISO from the files, during the imgburn ISO making process.

I installed Win 7 Pro to a blank formatted new drive, entered the product key during installation, activated it and it worked fine.
