Students = Cheap windows 7

Guys I did say to use vlite or the oscdimg.exe method rather than ISO/Imaging software when I posted earlier in the thread. Will be much more reliable.

After reading through all the difficulties you guys are having with the student version, I wasn't looking forward to trying my student copy (pro x64) on my gaming rig.

I've been running windows 7 x64 build 7600 (retail) version over the summer but just hadn't activated it yet, so I tried just putting in the student key and it activated perfectly online with no problems at all :p!

Maybe the activation noticed a dual boot with windows xp or just realised that the current install of windows 7 had been on top of a beta windows 7. I don't know, but it's always worth trying the normal way first :).

Is the build 7600 retail not ultimate edition ? student keys are either home premium or professional.. ? Has it activated as ultimate..

Oh sorry I neglected to say that I downloaded a professional x64 7600 version. Admittedly the download was much harder to find but it definitely exists :).

I've just installed it on my new hdd and the imgbum thing worked great but i've tryed to enter my product key to activate it and it said i wont activate because its only for an Upgrade ?

From what i gather if you run the setup again and select upgrade it will work.. Mine worked from a fresh install, seems some work some dont..

For what it's worth if anyone is still interested, my experience:

Prior setup: W7 RC on X25 and data only on raid 1 setup

What I did:

Download W7 Pro from digital river
Create bootable DVD using imgburn
Secure Erase X25 using hdderase
Install started, when entering key, it is invalid
Continue install with no key entered
When installed (still not activated), run setup.exe on the DVD from within windows to reinstall
Key now works perfectly, and I have W7 Pro fully activated

So basically we have to do this?:

Download and burn to bootable DVD.
Leave CD Key as it wont accept at this point.
Install but dont activate (can't).
Re-install (or repair?) Windows 7 from within newly installed OS, which will allow for CD Key to activate.

hi

i downloaded the student version x64 win7

problem is i can extract the files, when i double click it says unloading the box and near the end it gives me an error

incidentally the size is 2.89

although if i put through nero it comes out at 3,02

which also didnt work lol

i checked the md5 keys and they all check out fine

should i re-download?

i also tried using the oscdimg method but this says it cant find something or other leading me to think the file is probably corrupted.

i know you guys have had the same problems as i have read through 20 pages, so how did you solve??

thanks
fonzio
