Students = Cheap windows 7

If you mean you used an iso you created and now want to use the official dvd, then the answer is yes. This is what Ive just done and it worked fine.

If you mean you did an inplace upgrade but now want to custom install, I cant see why not. As always backup your data.

However the backup/restore function in win7 is useless, it just copies your documents etc and ignores drivers and settings.

Might as well do it yourself and then you have the peace of mind of knowing what you copied and where it went.

Thanks for this link, I ended up buying the W7 Pro 64 bit last night and d/l it from this link plus i also noticed it d/l's a DVD/USB ISO burning tool as well for easy creation of a bootable DVD or USB pen/HDD. ;)

Not sure what the normal link to the W7 d/l that they send you would d/l if this is the ISO? (its saved on my HDD as .ISO).

The normal link downloads 3 files, 2 box files and an installer which can be used to install W7 but problems arose when trying to install W7 x64 from a 32bit OS as the exe was a 64bit app and couldn't be executed under a 32bit OS. So they decided to release an ISO version which can just be burnt to DVD and booted from instead of having to be run from Windows.

Ok great, where can we get this iso version? Just so sick and tired of this, digitaldriver is utterly useless, first tried to install win7 back on the release day..... I don't remotely have the energy to search for this on their site. I'd like to do something else over the next 24 hours...

sorry........ so do you have a link? :)

Ah crap didn't notice you wanted premium. That won't work then afaik :( I'm not sure why the Gizmodo links aren't working for you, I click save link as...blah blah, then it starts downloading the 3Gb .iso?

I downloaded the Student 64 bit Professional upgrade for £30. I created a bootable DVD (which was a major hassle in itself) and then set about doing a custom install over my 32 bit Vista Home Premium. I though I was doing a full, clean install but apparently not - I clearly missed a step somewhere. I have a huge folder called Windows.old with all the stuff I spent all afternoon backing up to my portable USB HD. I did forget to back up my emails so its not that bad. My next questions are:

Should I start again and do a full clean install? Can I still do this with the upgrade version I downloaded. It all seems to be working fine at the moment, although the HD is getting a bit of a thrashing at start up - I only have 2Gb RAM so that could explain that.

Cheers

ah thanks. So into day 17 of trying to download a working version of windows 7.

The link you gave me decides to randomly stop every 15 seconds or so for about 10 seconds at a time. Then it thought: "hmm I know, I'll just restart the download altogether once it reaches 90mb". So it started again, downloading the same crap again, at 90mb the zipped file started to grow again.

But oh no, at 110mb the downloader thought: "nah lets stop again, so it did, then it downloaded another 7 mb of the same crap it downloaded before and then just stopped. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:
