Students = Cheap windows 7

Hm, I just tried to download the HP x64 ISO from the link I posted and got the same problem as you. Send Digital River an email and see what they say.

wow thank God, I thought I was going insane. I doubt an email will do anything, last time they replied after 7 days saying they can't help.

Hi Guys,

Was about to buy Win 7 from here but slightly worried about the above comments - I know its an Upgrade and like Vista you can clean install it without key and then reinstall it over itself with key to allow it to work, but it sounds like you cant download it properly from reason. Am I wrong?

Is a backup disc necessary and how long does that take to arrive? Hoping to have installed Win 7 this week...

ps3ud0, originally Digital River gave people a download that consisted of an exe and 2 .box files which could be used to install W7 from within a current Windows install. The problem with this however was that people wanting to upgrade from a 32 bit OS to x64 couldn't run the 64bit W7 install exe. There were various ways to get round this including using the exe and .box files to make your own bootable DVD but some people had problems doing this.
To combat this DR released an ISO version which people could email them to get links for and just burn straight to DVD or create a USB drive version with the supplied tool.

Personally I didn't have any problems downloading the original exe and .box files and then I downloaded the x64 Pro ISO fine with the link they provided. (I haven't installed yet because I need to be at home to back up all my data off the drive before I do a clean install.)

I had a go at downloading the other versions (x32/x64 HP) using the links I posted earlier (which DR hadn't actually given me but I guessed as they're fairly obvious) and the download manager worked but there have been problems downloading the actual ISO through the download manager. Now if thats just a problem with the DR servers or what we don't know yet as someone is waiting to hear back from them.

So in short, the x64 ISO should work fine (and is the same price as HP so there is no real reason not to get it provided your computer supports x64).

I've just tried the x64 Pro download again and its working fine @ 600k/sec.

So If I download this iso from win7 pro x64
I can burn it to a DVD and use my key I have got from MSDNAA (for win7 x64 pro) to clean install(on blank HDD) and everything is hunky dory?

Not sure, this is an upgrade version so might not work. If you have an MSDNAA account cant you just download it directly from there?

The thing is MSDNAA just gives me some kind of exe file rather than an iso. I need to clean install as I will be moving my hard drive to the new PC in a few days. Id rather not have to re-install XP and then have to install windows 7.

Hi NickM,

Thanks for the comment - guess it should be fine and Ive ordered the Win 7 Pro 64bit with Backup DVD. Will see how I go about getting a bootable ISO done for that as Ill be installing on a brand new PC and cba to install a previous OS...

Hopefully the backup DVD turns up quickly (sometime this week!!!)

Would a retail disk for HP allow me to install Pro?

ps3ud0

No you have to rip the disk to your pc, remove the config file then write it to a disk again as the config file tells it what version to install. With the file removed the disk asks you which version you wish to install.

I got pro, I didn't have a legal key to upgrade from, I just formatted the disk with the Release Candidate on it and installed - activated fine.

I've FINALLY sorted this now thanks to this helpful, and very easy guide:

Windows 7 at last

Thats pretty much what I used a few weeks ago and works fine and others as above.

Its not clear what is causing a problem for some people.

I figure the downloaded files/iso will only work with the key sent by DR, I suspect you'll get activation problems, let us know how you get on.

Hummm i had the activation problem where it complains your key is only an upgrade key (had to nuke my vista install to re-do the bootcamp partitioning thing) but just re-installing it over the same 7 pro install allowed me to activate :D

Think it just wants to make a windows.old file to allow you to activate the thing

Yes it's strange I tried 3 other guides and none worked, that one worked like a charm though.
In regards to activation, I did find that my product key was invalid. This thread has been recommended on how to fix it (go down to option 3):

I'm going to try solve it tomorrow when the UK microsoft team that deal with this are open.
