Ok so I've got my Win 7 Upgrade disk and product key from Digital River so I can do a clean install on my pc without any previous version of Windows on it. I also have my own retail copy of XP Pro I bought three years ago. Can I legitimately install this on my 2nd PC?

Read this thread, still don't get it!

I am on Win 7 64bit RC,
can I buy the £30 Pro 64bit edition and do a clean install from disc?

Thanks:)

Yes you can.

But you will have to pay an extra £9 for the disk to be sent to you which you can boot from and perform a clean install.

Or you could not buy the disk and burn your own from the downloaded files.

Cheers Laney,

so we've basically determined that, IF you are a student, you are getting a copy of WIN7 which you can install onto a new build...

What to go for, home or pro, they seem to cost the same?!

hey guys, im sure it beens asked before but the thread is so long its hard to see whats relevent and whats not

Basically im thinking of getting the £30 windows 7 upgrade student offer, i dont have a legit copy of xp, im running an incredibly out of date version on sp2 with a dodgy key and have been for years :p

What I would like to do, is purchase the 7 upgrade, download a windows 7 iso, and use the key on a fresh install, is this possible?

If a particular system of yours hasn't already been licensed to a legitimate copy of an OEM or Retail license of either Windows XP or Windows Vista, then I'm afraid you do not qualify for an Upgrade license. If you would like to purchase an Upgrade license of Windows 7 for a particular system, then that system has to already have been licensed to an OEM or Retail license of either Windows XP or Windows Vista.

If you do not qualify for a Windows 7 Upgrade license, then you need to purchase either an OEM or Retail license of Windows 7 which you can get from here.

rollocks, so I have genuine XP on another mobo, that's no good is it? I can't just use its serial number to get win7 on another machine:(
bah maybe i'll wait till RC expires then:)

Even though offically you cannot put this on a new build there is a very simple reg tweak and cmd prompt you can run which will activate the copy.

Just get hold of a full copy of 7 and install as normal, then look at Paul Thurroks websit, you apply a reg tweak, run a cmd script restart and then you can activate the copy no problem.

Either that or I hear that installling twice works too.

just recieved my key for Win 7 pro upgrade and the first 5 characters of the product key are all numbers, ive never seen this before should it be ok? The rest are a mixture but i won't be able to test it for a while.

If that is indeed the case, you technically are not licensed, although i doubt if microsoft really care.

from what i've been reading this seems true,
but worried making my own ISO wouldn't work and can't determine if the £9 disc is bootable, I assume it's gotta be...?

He isn't wrong. He's talking about what you need to meet the licensing agreements, you're talking about what actually works to get you installed and running. Technicaly speaking you're unlicensed. Might as well have just downloaded a hooky copy, from a licensing point of view anyway.
