Students = Cheap windows 7

no your wrong

i didnt have a single legit copy of windows registered previous to this as stated in your quote, i bought this student offer Windows 7 pro 64bit "upgrade", downloaded the iso, installed, registered all working no worrys

if you have a .ac.uk email addy, you can get a copy of windows 7 pro for £30, bargain

I'm sorry BAcon, but you are incorrect. To qualify for an Upgrade license, you need to have a previous legitimate copy of an OEM or a Retail license of either Windows XP or Windows Vista. If you do not follow these licensing terms, you will not be correctly licensed. However, that doesn't mean to say if you bought a Windows 7 Upgrade but have no intention of following the licensing terms of the Upgrade license, you won't be able to physically install it on your system.

But if Microsoft don't enforce it surely they don't mind/care?

You worried you'll hurt their feelings? :p

They have no way of knowing what licence (if any) you're upgrading from unless they change the current installation method, which they won't. So they can't flag you up on it. At least I don't see how they can.

At least we are paying something, and we ARE students
I see this as an NUS discount on something I need for my course, hence don't feel guilty that it works:)
Anyone know when this expires? I read early 2010 somewhere...

@ Bacon
where did you download the iso from?
ta

once you pay for it dude you will be forwarded to a page to download a bootable iso (necessary if you are on xp or a 32bit vista)

if microsoft cared that much about having a previously registered copy of windows it would be part of the installation/registration process, as its not, and i have paid for a legal cd key, i dont particulary care :)

I wonder if this reg hack will cause problems later on? Maybe a windows update will invalidate it or something?

Also is using the double install method any different to doing a clean install first time round?

Cheers everyone

I agree with this, at no point does it ask for evidence of a previous copy, there is nothing in the T&C that you have an existing copy either. I believe "upgrade" term is causing confusion, something MS are quite good at.

Students can get loads of free software from their Universities the only condition is they have to be a current student. I have a nice copy of server 2003 but not sure what do with it.

Still running the 'student upgrade' version, from a clean install, on this system and it is fine. Made the ISO as per instructions in the thread and it is fine. It is validated and, uh, it works.

I also bought the retail version and it is identical in all ways.

Sorry, you’ve arrived too late for our special student Windows 7 offer
But don’t despair – a number of Microsoft partners have lots of special deals on Microsoft software for students – including for Windows 7.
Find out more from our partners:

Seems the Win 7 offer has now ended.:( Doesnt really matter though, because Software4students sells the dvd version of the offer for about £38 before P&P I believe... exactly same as MS education direct...dvd version seems a bit more practical.

Pity that, was eyeing it up. Though you still can get MS Office via the offer still.
