Subaru-powered Toyota FT-86 gets closer to production...

It's got a proper engine, a nice shape and RWD so it's sufficiently different enough, I'd have thought.

so did celica's at various points in there past, but i can deffinetly see why they would want to go with a new name, i'm just not convinced there is any parralels to be drawn between the ae86 and the ft86 other than the FR layout, as a marketing thing its great though.

Needs to be white with a black bonnet... which actually leads me on to my main issue with this, it doesn't look a thing in any way shape or form like an ae86. Looks more like a Supra.

Not in any way would that look good. Would look so chavved! Yeah it doesn't look liek the AE86 but show me a modern car that looks remotely like the older version. And looking like a Supra? Whats wrong with that? They are gorgeous cars!

I'd just like to welcome Toyota back to the interesting car world. They've had a period where they've only created average cars for old people.

Agreed +9000

Styling isn't to my taste 100% (especially the front, the rear is nice!) but I do like it. Needs better wheels

Can see the Supra influences on the rear. Black doesn't really show it off either, perhaps it's the photography.

Bets on the time between release and the first SR20DET swap in one? :p

Most people prefer the RB now!

Just means cheaper parts for the rest of us. :p

Because it's not a Supra, its an AE86.

As for the white and black, I suggest a little research into Initial D. All AE86's need to be in that colour scheme :D

200bhp from a 2 litre is easy, i have never understood the deal with flat 4s, a normal 4 with a dry sump sits as low and is a lot easier to work with. I have really gone of modern cars though, they offer nothing over the more fun older stuff.

there is also emissions and fuel consumption to be taken into account

if they want it to be anything but a niche market car they have to make it appeal to a wider audience

where to toyota see this fitting into the market?

you either price into the enthusiast market with the tax and fuel consumption to boot and hope the marque will carry it (would you pay a fortune for a toyota?)

or do you go for the middle ground like a TT/RCZ/possibly the astra coupe/scirroco etc 200 ish bhp and around 170/180 co2/km

toyota will be in it for the volume as thats what their game is, subaru may come up with the more specialised models, but if they are in it to make money they will want to appeal as many buyers as possible.

and would a normally aspirated engine have the torque low enough down the rev range? people seem to want to have the power on tap rather than revving the nuts of something, especially given current trends for keeping emissions low and trying not to drink fuel

This is a rather nice looking car, something I hardly thought I'd say about a Toyota, but it really does look pretty darn good.

However, I do think it needs the 270bhp 3.5 L 2GR-FE V6 engine out of the Camry, with 6 speed auto with paddle-shift and regular manual options.

I don't think the Subaru engine in N/A form iis going to do much for it at all.

Edit: Then again I think what I have in mind isn't so much a spiritual successor to the AE86 at all, it's a new Soarer, this thing is just far too small for what I have in mind, I thought it was bigger than it is at first.

just had a quick look and the N/A current 2 litre boxer outputs 199 co2/km and returns 32.9 combined which puts it well behind other modern sports coupes if they intend to sell it for 20-25k

other manufacturers seemm capable of getting decent power combined with economy even from petrols

Yes I know that but even so it would look chavved. Also the time difference between both models is so long that most prospective buyers will just not care about any homage to the "original".

At the end of the day this is an FT86 not an AE86, plus im banking on the fact a lot more people would prefer to see a modern day Supra TT than a AE86 but thats just my opinion.

To the comments about the N/A engine. I agree it isn't going to be the best move. I could imagine a 2L turbo being standard as the extra torque, power and efficency would make the cut. Considering many manufacturors are following the turbo/supercharger method a lot, more so with turbos, all in the quest for smaller engines with more power.

I've heard 226BHP from the 2.0l at 6500rpm in a car that weighs 1300-1400kg and is RWD. I think thats a lot of win!

Though a 300+ BHP turbo option is required for sure.

I've heard ~2700lb, which 1225kg (based upon Subaru engineer saying they are looking at 20% lighter than the Impreza)

I will be disappointed if it is over 1300kg

Don't forget, the car is DAMN small. The dimensions are not that much bigger than what you find on MX5 and S2k really.

As for power, it is an all new "free flowing" 2L boxer, it is NOT an EJ boxer.

I would love to see an SC version personally, but I feel the after market will take care of that anyway.

Agreed that the original looked better. It will be interesting to see what the interior is like, hopefully in this case it's nothing like the concept car!

Really looking forward to this car :)
