Subaru-powered Toyota FT-86 gets closer to production...

and would a normally aspirated engine have the torque low enough down the rev range? people seem to want to have the power on tap rather than revving the nuts of something, especially given current trends for keeping emissions low and trying not to drink fuel

A 2.0L N/A engined tuned to give just 140bhp is hardly going to be a torqueless wonder is it? The old Vauxhall 16v engine had ~155bhp and pulled like a train from low RPM.

like I said I am not clear where in the market they are aiming for

they are not releasing a sporty model just for the sake of it, they will have a market in mind...it just depends whether that market is the hairdressers who care not what is under the bonnet or the affordable sports car market where people can have a bit of fun without breaking the bank

Really, did you seriously say that? The whole spiritual ae86 successor line has completely gone over your head then :/

Pretty nice, convertible version please.

Would be win. Some rumours are staing that they are postioning this to rival the MX5 and 370z, kinda bridging the gap between the two cars so maybe a soft top/folding hard top isn't too unrealistic.

I would love to see a folding hardtop like on the newer revision MX5, I know its not as "badass" but it would be sweeeet :D

I've heard 226BHP from the 2.0l at 6500rpm in a car that weighs 1300-1400kg and is RWD. I think thats a lot of win!

Though a 300+ BHP turbo option is required for sure.

I just don't think its good enough at the moment to have nearer 200bhp than 250+. Hot hatches are chucking out silly horsepower nowadays and this has to at LEAST equal them.

I think those that are tied up on willy waving dont really understand the point of this car and its Dad.

Cant wait to see one in the metal, although I imagine theres quite a wait yet.

sadly I am not immersed in the history of japanese sports cars

people pin their hope on it being a successor to an older car....but european markets are very different to japanese markets

are they aiming this at a specific audience and do they want to make any money on it?

we will see I suppose when they officially announce the engine line up..lets hope we are not disappointed with a diesel version and a wheezy 1.5

its not the 80's anymore, customers want more from their cars, especially when they are paying a lot more for them

I do like it but the new headlight design is hideous and none of it looks as good as the G spec version they wheel out from time to time, I just hope they make that one too.

They've made the production car so conservative, the rear is so generic and bland so disappointing when the two concepts were gorgeous and feasible to go into production like for like or at least 90% of it. But the car itself no doubt will be superb.

Just looks so iffy and dated. I really hope that image is fake!

"Toyota says the new model will launch in 2012 in Europe, with prices confirmed closer to the date."

That scares me, Toyota told the Aussie press it was going to be $30,000 (just under £20,000) so there's nothing stopping them telling our press except perhaps they haven't decided what to lump on top of the exchange rate >.>

It's not fake the leaked options catalog images are the reason the autocar first look etc have been released ahead of schedule.

That rear end is so bland

Was in the Toyota dealership about a month ago with the wife getting her car serviced and they had a Toyota promo poster for the FT86 up on the wall.

Think it looks alright, bit generic jap small coupe like but I like it :)
