Subaru-powered Toyota FT-86 gets closer to production...

Front bumper and lights on that actually look a bit vw scirocco-esque to me.

Looks pretty good though, wouldn't mind trying one out.

I think im actually in love with this car. I hope they sell well, I would love to pick one up in two years time when I have a proper job :)

Do you reckon the people moaning about power wouldn't be moaning if it were 250 instead of 200 bhp? Or if it had a turbo to give it that feel of urgency?

I'd prefer a 250 bhp n/a engine myself ( not a fan of turbos). It has been said a billion times it needed to be a bit faster, but the 'slow' one will probably depreciate like a stone and hopefully a faster one will be here next year. So wait s year and get a cheap 'slow' one.

I'm quite surprised how many people are jumping on the needs more power bandwagon, it's a car that's been designed to be fun to drive with (according to my beer mat calculations 160bhp/ton and a 7.5s 0-60 time and all for £25k. Compare that to figures shamelessly stolen from our very own bhp/ton thread and none of those cars are what you would call slow.

Sure you could pick up a hot hatch with better straight line speed for the same money but that's missing the point of the fun you can have exploiting a well sorted RWD car with just enough power to make things interesting without the risk of loosing your license everytime you plant your right foot.

Hardly any of those cars are competitive to the GT86 though, maybe the MR2 and the MX5. But both of those models are at least 10 years old. So a silly comparison really.

I never said that they were, fact is that right now with the exception of the BRZ I can't think of anything that really is. My point is that lots of people seem to think the car doesn't have enough power when it's performance should be fairly similar to the cars in my list and not many people would consider for example a BMW 330 a slow car.

An E46 330 (if that is what you're referring to) is hardly the Starship Enterprise either, it's similar to performance to most hot hatches.

Not many cars are RWD these days due to cost, the only other competitor this has that is RWD is a 370z, which costs about 5k more, but is obviously more powerful with 3.7L v 2.0L. Edit to add the Z4 - no idea on their specs/prices tbh... but I assume the BMW equivalent is a good 10-20% more?

I hope it sells well as it will hopefully encourage other manufacturers to make rwd sports cars... we're limited to MX-5, 370z and Z4's at the moment (with some American stuff also available), but I personnally will not be drifting round roundabouts and would feel pretty annoyed/disapointed when "flooring" it on a dual carriageway etc that some middle-aged man in his oil-burning A4 comes clattering past.

The usal "add a 'charger" comments are just stupid... sure, spend another £5k+ and mess up the way it drives/handle etc... Just buy the better car in the first place (Z4/370z).

It will sell amazingly well in its domestic market I would imagine...

But as soon as people in the UK start "blinging" them up or modifying them they'll just be tarnished as "chav" just like every other 'fast/sporty' Jap car e.g. 350z, Civic Type R, Skylines, Impreza's, Evo's etc...

As I said earlier, will be a great used buy in 1-2 years, but brand new? Crazy.

They need to call it the Toyota FT-86 S-Line or something with amazing levels of soft-touch plastic inside, or annoying DRLs.
