Suicide and WoW

Depression is not just feeling a bit sad or simply being "emo", it's a crippling disease that can ruin a perfectly normal life. Someone really sociable before can be reduced to a wreck. It's not just about "pulling yourself together" or "getting your life in shape" - this has physical and mental symptoms that can put the fear of god into someone or make them experience extreme and irrational panic for no particular reason.

Too often doctors are ill equipped to be able to diagnose people and will often fob them off with anti-depressants that all too often don't work instead of helping them make the first step towards helping themselves get better. Too often the social stigma and social prejudices mean that some people with mental illnesses are afraid to speak out about it.

I have had a less severe form of manic depression for the best part of ten years now. I've come to terms with it myself and am not afraid any more to speak openly about it. I have had to put up with doctors who are all too ready to offer pills above any real help, psychologists who were no real help at all and parents who denied that there was anything wrong. Finally, this year I tried hypnotherapy and it seems to be working. I find that my way of thinking has changed somewhat. Instead of over-analysing things I now find it easier to not worry about things and move on. I'm hoping to reduce my reliance on pills and move on with my life.

I'm not afraid to say that I have considered suicide at some low points. I'm a coward though and couldn't bring myself to ever try it. From what I've read about this case, I don't think this was a cry for help - I think that the guy just couldn't face life any more. The game is inconsequential in this case; the guy had his normality taken away and couldn't see a reason for living any more. The guild shouldn't blame themselves - they aren't there to be counsellors, nor could they have known his true state of mind. It's tragic but could it have been avoided? It's debatable really.

"WoW is bad..... mmmkay"

Someone killed themselves earlier this month on a football forum i frequent, he was proper crazy, thought people in his TV could see him, it was sad to see him go crazy, whether or not him being banned from the website had anything to do with his decision, no one will ever know.

Some of the posts in this thread are just pathetic. You people making fun about suicide are low lifes. My sister has suffered from depression and has been anorexic for a good 8 years of her life. I've seen her close to taking her life, its not a pleasant thing to witness. She is better now and has a damn good paying job and is living the good life. There is hope for everyone.

Nope it happened in WoW. Saw a video of the attack, should be a vid floating around somewhere. Was so harsh but so funny but it's stupid really to have it in a PvP enabled zone let alone in the game itself.

That whole drama was taken quite seriously by Blizzard.

Blizzard permanently banned the entire guild after that.

Urghh, my girlfriend was addicted to WoW for a while, its a bizzare game!

In terms of this guy though, must be so many other problems. I dont think anyones last bit of stability should be on the internet! Just look at how demoralising these forums can get!

If people play a game enough they lose all concept of reality, fun, socialisation, fteinds.
They can't function.

It's like being put in prison, you're scared of the outside world if you stay in for too long, you can't live like a normal person any longer.

I don't get why, i've always found games like wow, guild wars, runescape to be incredibly boring and repetitive.

I wonder how many of the keyboard warrior kids in this thread would still be saying "natural selection" if they developed mental problems and were suicidal as a result, or if it were a friend or family member of theirs that attempted suicide.

"Things that make you go hmmmmmm."

Any source? Just seems odd...

This is quite old a quick google gave some background info that I also recal from back then.

"It was a girl that died, of cancer I think... She had been in this horde guild, that had a nasty rivalry with an alliance guild.

Her guild thought it would be a cool idea to hold a little ceremony in-game so that all of the players could remember her... They held it in the pvp zone because apparently it was the girl's favorite zone(I remember she use to fish there), and invited everyone to come. Her friends logged her character in by the lake and had people line up and pay her homage one by one...

The rival guild has other plans, and massacres the **** out of all of them."

You can use google and the info above to find the rest out and the banning.

Totally agree.

Until you know someone or have suffered with depression that borders on susicidal, then you shouldnt really make silly comments.

Also telling someone that they should throw themselves infront of a train is a BAD idea.

Trust me, I know.
