Summer Transfer Thread 2018

Daley Blind has left United. He was decent for a few seasons but clearly didn't figure in Mourinho's plans, so I'm glad he's gone. At the very worst United have made their money back on him, and could make a £4 million profit with add-ons. Now Mourinho needs to get rid of Darmian and Jones and he'll have cut out some of the deadwood.

LVG really was a transfer disaster wasn’t he? Over £258m spent and only three decent signings (that have really contributed) came of it, Herrera, Martial and Rojo.

The Alisson links seemed to have picked up a fair bit today with all sorts of stories coming out of Italy that we've bid or are about to make an offer of around €60m.

Indeed they have.

How much have people seen of Alisson? He's really highly rated but whenever I've seen him I haven't been convinced at all.

The statto's say he's the best thing since sliced bread, out performing this expected goals stuff better than any keeper in Europe last season. I can't say I saw much of Brazil at the WC but I was left neither impressed or unimpressed with him when I saw him against us - I see a lot of people talk about the amount of goals we scored past Roma but I don't think he was at fault for any of them and it could have been a few more in the first leg had it not been for him.

edit: looks like there's substance to it. Chris Bascombe has just tweeted to say we've made a £62m offer for Alisson.

Yeah and even Rojo is a bit questionable, he's had the odd good patch of form here and there but on the whole he's either been injured or prone to errors and rash challenges.

The problem is that most of the signings have underperformed rather than being bad signings at the time. Id say when they were made most people were pretty pleased with the majority of them. When they all fail, questions have to be asked as to how that can be. We seem to have generally lost the knack for improving players.

Im really not sure about this, admittedly all I've seen of Allison was the champions league and the world cup, but it left me very underwhelmed for a supposed 60m keeper. Couldnt really see what all the fuss was about him.

Is it really that much worse than most other transfer records?

Herrera - £29m (decent signing)
Shaw - £30m (hasn't worked out, especially under Mourinho but could easily be different under another manager)
Rojo - £16m (decent enough for that money)
Di Maria - £60m (waste of money, not suited to the league, bad signing - only recouped about £44m?)
Blind - £14 (has been ok for the money, not part of Mourinho's plans, but was able to cover a lot of positions during initial transition phase post-Moyes)
Falcao - £6m loan (gamble, but probably worth taking for minimal outlay)
Valdes - £0 (pointless signing, but not really relevant as no real outlay)
Martial - £36m (looks decent, could probably do a lot better under another manager)
Depay - £25m (couldn't cope with the league, poor signing but recouped a decent amount (£16-22m)
Darmian - £13m (ok signing for that money)
Schneiderlin - £24m (not a good signing, but got back anything from £20-24m so hardly worth worrying about)
Schweinsteiger - £6.5m (did ok initially as some experience for the dressing room. Complete collapse after Mourinho took over)
Romero - £0 (decent enough)

Don't get me wrong, his transfer record wasn't stellar by any means, but most of the signings he made were either slightly speculative youth purchases (Shaw, Martial, Depay) which can easily go either way, or short term fixes, who were near the end of their career (Falcao, Schweinsteiger, Valdes). Very few were 'premium' players in their peak that you'd expect to still be at the top of their game now (Di Maria, Herrera) and the rest were surely intended to be squad players, which is pretty much the level they've played to.

Can you really include the players you sold on as meaningless. Players are bought by a massive club like Man Utd to improve the team and bring titles. Even if you get the money back, their contribution, or lack of it, can still mark them down as a bad signing.

Don’t forget, you would also have paid them a lot of money during their uneffective stay. God knows what Falcaos per goal wages worked out at!

Seems Allison is likely to happen, rumours of twitter fekir is done and will get the 10 shirt.

Fekir saga will be a dead line day situation imo, its easy for false reports saying 10 shirt because people class him as our countinho replacement
