Sounds like we aren't giving up on Cesc, regardless of what Zubizarreta has said:

Cesc Fabregas: Man United still keen despite Barca claims

Manchester United remain keen to pursue a deal for Cesc Fabregas despite Barcelona claiming they have given up on signing the Spain midfielder.

The Premier League champions have already had two offers for the 26-year-old former Arsenal captain turned down.

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta told a Spanish newspaper United have "renounced his signing".

This seems to be coming from Andy Mitten, Miguel Delaney and also Howard Nurse (Howard said he's had it independently verified and isn't just quoting Andy Mitten):

#MUFC could soon make a third bid for Fabregas in the region of €40m (£34.5m). #FCB

Howard Nurse ‏@howardnurse
My understanding is that #MUFC ARE still actively pursuing bid to sign Cesc Fabregas from #FCB contrary to reports in Spain on Sunday.

This just seems so ridiculous (all this persistence in the face of public adversity) that I think it could happen now. :/

Sunday Mirror saying we could go for Schweinsteiger instead...

Seems unlikely, but I'd love him and his wife in the EPL :p

I'd love him too but there's no chance of that happening unless Pep decided he doesn't want him, which would be totally insane as he's a club icon.

But what happens when Podolski/Giroud/Walcott get injured or suspended? We have no one...

What about if we need to try something different(Yeah I hear myself suggesting that :p) and we dont have different players to put on?

We need more players, we have a good core of players who really started to come together towards the end of the season. We kept those we wanted but we needed to add three or four players to that squad.

We are relying upon people like rosicky, diaby, wilshere to stay fit all season or we are screwed.

Indeed. Of the people we've got rid, most were down the pecking order in their positions... we could use some more variety in terms of wide attacking players or someone who isn't afraid to run at defenders (but unlike Gervinho or Walcott, can get past them) and we never have anyone who can come off the bench and offer something different or make the opposition wary. Obviously options at central defence are a little thin now too if either Kos/Mert are injured.

Double dose of crazy there! :o

1998–1999 British Virgin Islands
2009–2010 Academica
2010–2011 Porto
2011–2012 Chelsea
2012–PRES Spurs

The longest he's managed any club is Tottenham, where he's been for one full season and going into his second, so I'm not entirely sure on what basis you believe he'd "be here for the long run" if he were to be Man Utd manager.
If Young wasn't injured every 30 mins, I reckon he'd be pretty good. Kagawa will be a beast this season!

He's doing pretty good at Spurs, if he kept Man Utd at the top, why would he leave or get fired, Chelsea didn't give him a chance.

We'll be going after Messi next.

UTD have been linked with the most unrealistic transfers I have ever seen.

Just get Garay, Fellaini , Baines and a new striker and be done with it.

Wayne Rooney subject of another Chelsea bid but Manchester United turn it down

The fee, believed to be in the region of £25 million, was instantly dismissed by United manager David Moyes, who has continually stressed the England forward will stay with the Premier League champions.

But Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who saw an initial bid of around £20  million turned down last month, will continue in his pursuit of the 27-year-old and remains desperate to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

Telegraph Sport understands the situation is set to come to a head this week with Rooney, who is angry at United’s stance, ready to hand in a transfer request and force a move away from Old Trafford. The striker is expected to be named in the United squad to face AIK in Stockholm on Tuesday night with Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial against Seville next up on Friday.

Darren Bent would be a good buy IMO, he can be had for £6m supposedly and would be on similar money to Gervinho/Chamakh at worst.

As for the comment about about clearing out deadwood but not buying anyone that doesn't actually bother me in itself because there is no point offloading mediocre players and just bringing in more of the same. If the deadwood is genuine deadwood then it doesn't really need replacing anyway as youth prospects can fill the gap.

e.g. when it comes to forwards the first choice line appears to be Podolski/Giroud/Walcott so if players like Chamakh/Gervinho/Bendtner were to leave then it doesn't harm the first XI; if they are replaced they need to be replaced by good players who can offer a realistic challenge for the matchday squad.

Essentially Arsenal's squad had got too big in terms of people picking up £40k/week+ and having been at the club for a fair while but never really establishing themselves in the team. The exodus this summer is largely just a long overdue cull and the fact you see such players (in their 20s, been at a the club for a couple of years at least etc) going out on loan is usually a bad sign as it isn't a case of a teenager gaining some experience, it means the club has too many players, can't find a role for some of them and just wants a contribution towards their wages.

I am actually suprise Darren Bent hasn't been snapped up already, Villa have made it very public they want to off-load him. He'd be a great impact sub for a big team or focal point for a smaller/new promoted team.

Arsenal have been that way for a long while though, having teenager/early 20's on there books and progressing them. Its a shame they either sell them or they fade away. Players like Wiltshire and Ramsey are the execption but over the last 5 years thats a pretty poor showing.

I hope they do finally play wallcot in CF/ST role as he seem to suit that position very well. He has a feirce shot on him and his dribbling is suberb, no reason why he cant be a great CF/ST.

Like you say options are few though, walcot, groiud and podolski, if one of them gets injured there in deep trouble.

Yes but they aren't exactly players who play in the core of the midfield. Kagawa is great if he gets the ball in the final third. Young is great if...oh, hang on.

You need somebody who will drive you forward from the middle of the pitch - a Gerrard, Yaya, Fabregas. Someone like that. Your central midfielders are all painfully static.

Also, Kagawa can only play if he has players in and around him. At Dortmund, the whole team bombs on, and he could play his little passes brilliantly. At united last year he'd get the ball, look up, and have maybe two options. He's the sort of player who needs a team to play to his style. Otherwise it's like having Carroll in a team that plays on the ground.

The Ronaldo rumours aren't going away though, it would be such a complex deal however and I can't see it happening, amazing as it would be.

Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed a new five-year contract at Real Madrid. The 27-year-old has extended his stay at the Bernabeu until 2018, increasing his annual salary to 17m euros (£14.8m) after tax.

(im not questioning your judgement atall, im just interested but...) How do you know?

It seems very low brow for such a big move considering United were chasing him heavily.

It's Marca.

And also he held a press conference earlier, I'm on my phone so can't be arsed to copy and paste the quotes but they are easy to find.
