July 1st

Current names being linked are Alcantara and Strootman (or the Dutch Gareth Barry as his manager calls him)

Thiago is another one we've been linked with for a few years. How many good young players have left Barca recently and gone on to be a success at other big clubs?

Alcantara is the real deal, the problem for anyone who might sign him is another Csec problem down the line, probably not far down the line either given how old Xavi is now

Which raises the question why Barca are willing to let him go. If he was the real deal then you'd have thought Barca would be desperate to keep him as the successor to Xavi.

Exactly my point. I look at players like Dos Santos, Bojan, Romeu and you can see why Barca weren't desperate to keep them.
I think he is a good player but I just don't see him at Barca. I just don't see him as a replacement for Xavi. Someone like Sergi Roberto suits that role more. Thiago is more like Iniesta imo.

I heard that too. Anyone knows the fee?
Free apparently.

From what I've read it's the player that's pushing for the move rather than the club

And for everyone of those players you've mentioned there's a Alba, Pique and Fabregas

Those all left the club much, much younger though. Sometimes it can be hard to tell when a youth player will make it.

don't they leave early because they can't be offered a contract in Spain as early as they can in other countries and, particularly at Barcelona, if you're not convinced you'll ever get in the first team you might jump at the opportunity to at least be a professional footballer somewhere?

Few sources are reporting that Arsenal are willing to smash their wage structure to bring Rooney in for nigh on £200k a week.

I think it's rubbish, but you never know in this game. Maybe he'll view it as a perfect opportunity for revenge on Man U for replacing him, which they essentially did with RVP.

He's got a newborn. I can't see him really wanting to uproot and move abroad.

I think that was the case with Fabregas, not sure about the others.

No doubt he's already asked his pal David what life is like in Paris. And Madrid. Probably Milan too.

It would be interesting to see him at Arsenal, but I'd really much prefer not getting him. The money I feel could be put to much, much better use.

Arsenal wouldn't pay what we'd ask, I don't think.

Arsenal always say that when season tickets are up for renewal, have for the last few years.

Even then, I can't see Wenger spending £40m~ on Rooney.

No either do I, but then Wenger may not have all the say in this...Usmanov seems to be able to influence decision making at Arsenal recently.

I don't think Rooney would want to come to us and we all know Arsene would never spend that much (guessing over £20m) on one player, quite rightly too. His wages would be stupidly high and in all honesty I don't think he has the magic which he used to have. For the money we'd have to spend to bring him to the club we'd be expecting performances week in and out as well as the behaviour of a model pro. Rooney is exceptional on his day but his day is nowhere near as often any more as it was in the past, and as for the model pro stuff he's basically a fat chav.
