Tottenham splash the cash to bring in Willian and Lamela as Gareth Bale nears exit door
TOTTENHAM last night shattered their club transfer record once again as they splashed out £60million on Willian and Erik Lamela – paving the way for Gareth Bale to confirm his £104m move to Real Madrid by the end of the week.
Brazilian Willian completed a £30m move from Anzhi Makhachkala , while Argentine winger Lamela is today expected to seal a £29.9m transfer from AS Roma.
Real’s £18m defender Fabio Coentrao is close to agreeing a switch and, with Bale valued at £86m, the package has reached the £104m fee Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has placed on the Welshman.
A source close to the Bale deal told the Daily Express last night: “Talks are still ongoing. It is not tied up yet, but we hope soon. There are still some details to be agreed.”
If the Coentrao deal is successfully concluded, Spurs will have taken their summer spending to an astonishing £136m.
Willian, 25, underwent a medical in London yesterday and signed a five-year deal worth about £65,000 a week, Spurs having captured the skilful forward from under the noses of Liverpool.
Lamela, 21, flew in to London yesterday after a fee was agreed with Roma.
The winger had talks with Tottenham’s director of football Franco Baldini and is expected to finalise his deal after a medical today. Spurs had already spent some £57.6m this summer, on Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Nacer Chadli and Etienne Capoue.
As the Daily Express revealed last week, Tottenham’s majority shareholder Joe Lewis has given Levy the go-ahead to back manager Andre Villas-Boas with funds this summer in a bid for a major push for the Premier League title.
Initially the idea was to persuade Bale – who has not travelled with the squad for their Europa League match away to Dynamo Tbilisi tomorrow – to stay for another year, but with the Madrid deal now all but complete barring the small print, top-class replacements have now been secured.
Spurs could also spring one last surprise in this extraordinary window for the club, with a £7m move for Steaua Bucharest centre-back Vlad Chiriches also revived in the last 24 hours, and only awaiting a work permit to be completed.
The London club are also keen on 24-year-old Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld, who has only a year left on his contract – and the Dutch club’s Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen.
