don't doubt that, but i would have thought they could have done better.

my main issue is them going back on there usual policy of transfer age, shows a lack of planning on there part to replace carragher, can say about the uncertainty with skertl forcing things, but again that goes back to them not controlling things.

I highly doubt Toure is being brought in to play week in week out, Liverpool will either go back to Skrtel & Agger or another CB (with the long term in mind) will be brought in.

We're reportedly in negotiations to sign Kyriakos Papadopoulos a very highly rated 21 year old CB for £12-15m and possibly Tiago Ilori (a 20 year old CB from Sporting Lisbon) too.

Assuming Skrtel and Coates follow Carragher out of the club and the 2 above are brought in, we'd be very short of experience in defense. Having an experienced CB (whether Toure's the right man is another question) for a year or 2 as cover/competition for 2 younger/inexperienced CB's isn't bad planning imo.

edit: And the whole thing about the owners wanting to sign young players doesn't really apply to free signings. The thinking is that when you pay a transfer fee on a younger player it's more beneficial for 2 reasons:
1 - You get more for your money. i.e. pay £10m on a 20 year old and you might get 10+ years out of him for that £10m. If you spend it on a 30 year old, you might only get 2-3 years.
2 - If you don't get the 10+ years out of a player, it's easier to sell them on and recoup your money.

Toure is a good signing. Solid CB with experience, something we've arguable not had for a while. We've apparently been looking around for an 'older head' for a while, so it's not a knee jerk reaction to losing Carragher/Skrtel being bombed out. Now we just need to get in the young Greek lad, and maybe the the youngster from Sporting along with a few others and I think we're set.

Interesting to see Kolo has gone to Liverpool. A decent CB but I'm glad he's off the wage bill, only a few days left for Bridge and Santa Cruz as well!
Around 300k a week on three players, two of which I couldn't tell you the last time they played!

Lots of rumours that Strootman to United is a done deal.

Saw this on Twitter, I assume this is what's fanning the flames?

Strootman's agent was asked at a charity event in Holland on his proposed move to United & his reply apparently was "everything is agreed"...

Don't know much about him except from FM and that 'the new Barry' thing, don't know what to think really :p

From what I've heard I think he'd be a good addition.

Like Kagawa last year I wont pass comment on a player I've seen very little off (or in Strootman's case never seen) but any midfielder likened to Gareth Barry doesn't exactly excite though tbh :(

(backup to Carrick is needed though considering how much he's been forced to play over the past 2 seasons)

a lot of rumors going around about Villa to Spurs.

Interesting if true, as he would be leaving a side that is in CL football, won the league title a week ago to go to a club that isnt in the CL and neither is challenging for the title. Massive step down for Villa if true but then hes what 31 or something?? so probably only has a yr or 2 to play at the top level...one thing is for sure, hes not the same after he broke his leg a year ago.

He knows he isn't going to get into the Barca side now, especially with Neymar just signing.

All Spurs need is someone (other than Bale) to stick the ball in the back of the net, and I think Villa could be the best possible signing we could get/afford. I don't know how much he is on a week at Barca though? The price for the transfer is supposedly going to be around £15m.

The full quote is:

"[He would be good for] Liverpool and Tottenham, but I think he's also good enough for Manchester City and Manchester United.

"Strootman is as good as Gareth Barry. He's a very useful player for every team. Especially when he's surrounded by better players."

It's more of a follow on from the good enough for Manchester City, considering Gareth Barry gets games and that he's a useful player.

He's also captained the Netherlands & PSV side at a young age of 23, which people seem to forget that he's young.

I know what Advocaat said but being as good as Gareth Barry isn't a ringing endorsement however you want to spin it.

I don't take it as that, I take it as a jovial 'Well he's as good as Gareth Barry at least!' poking fun that Barry gets into the City line up.

Most United fans want to spin anything any way they can though, the turn from most from gagging for Strootman to now not is quite funny.

He's a player that's been capped 18 times at senior level for Holland, amongst other things. It's a wonder he's been at PSV for two seasons.

Based on his credentials and the praise and responsibility given to him for club and country I'm not sure how people can get so caught up on a quote that's more than likely out of context about Gareth frikking Barry.

I guess he just isn't exotic enough.

Like I said I've never seen him play so all I have to go on is what I've read and what I have read has been (typically) fairly varied when it comes to how good he actually is.

For 17m (the fee attached with these rumours) I'd expect him to be a little bit special though...

Monaco are buying everyone.

Also rumored to be going to Monaco:

Tevez
Rooney
Nasri
Sagna
Kompany

............

Strootman is the captain of his team at 23, he must have something special about him. Never seen him play but know the name well.
