Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Freefaller, any good reading material for this sort of thing? I like the sound of it, I'll be transferring my carbs to the morning and afternoon for sure.

Lots! Anita Bean is quite a good author on such things.
Doug McGuff and John Little are pretty good

Then of course there are all the big names like Columbu, Joe Weider and so on that have written journals and books.

There are a lot of nutrition research papers out there and books - if you're willing to spend a bit of money just buy some books for a summer holiday and read up on it.

You soon end up learning the facts and science behind how your body works., Heck even some GCSE/Alevel books are worthy reading, it's not too advanced either and easy to follow. Then when you mix the biology knowledge with training and nutritional knowledge you're on a good path to understanding more.

I'm still learning lots - but I haven't had that much time to study at the moment. IT does take time and effort to read about it.

Books and papers are better than internet "facts" :)

I've just finished reading the Paleo Diet by Loran Cordain, very insightful read into how grains/processed/legumes effect your body and the possible effects it has towards most of todays common diseases and cancers.

There are a few things I dont agreee with. He says stay away from fatty cuts of meat, although back in the day I would have thought they would be more desireable to a hunter gatherer. He also says to limit eggs to 6 a week due to it increasing blood cholesterol which I disagree with. Theres a couple more which I cant remember atm, but overal I agree with his writings and will probably be paleo for the rest of my life.

I agree with what you disagree with (if that makes sense).

Your body doesn't absorb cholesterol, it produces it itself.

Furthermore Cholesterol is important:

It helps make the outer coating of cells.
It makes up the bile acids that work to digest food in the intestine.
It allows the body to make Vitamin D and hormones, like estrogen in women and testosterone in men

In fact, there's a good article here:

Thanks ff, looks awesome, sub'd!

Always been into how the body works and how food effects us but really getting into it lately.

Anyone here used Thermogenics?

I'm in the middle of a pretty big cut right now and I took my first Thermogenics today (Thermopure from MP) got quite a nice effect from them, I'd go far as to say that I'd have never made it through todays training without them.

All in all it seems to be a good product and one I'd recommend for anyone looking for an extra helping hand whilst cutting.

Nope. All they do is act as a "pickmeup" and don't actively burn fat - so I'd recommend a cup of coffee and a high intensity training regime with some HIIT thrown in (3x weight sessions and 2-3x HIIT sessions). Much much better than any sup.

Fat loss supplements whilst some swear by them you'll have others disagreeing completely.

The supplements alone won't shift any fat but coupled with an already effective weightloss/fat burning program you might find they help 1 maybe 2% more than without. Even then it'd be hard to tell.

However if you feel it's something that is necesary to you, helps get you through your training and can justify the cost then by all means.

I used (now mix my own) NO supplements which claim to help lower bodyfat though this is debatable and isn't the reason I use them.

Caffeine is good for helping during cutting.

Any recommendations for a decently priced weight gainer?

I need something quick and easy for carrying around one or two days a week, just to get those added calories. I seem to need more and more these days and it's often not possible which results in my mood draining and an awful feeling of hunger.

Bag of protein blend, bag of ground oats and some flax seed. Should work out better value and be just as good without all the sugar normally packed into gainers

I keep reading about people placing oats into their protien shakes, what bonus would this give?

Considering at current:
I'll take PHD synergy(1 scoop/ half a shake) in the morning with some porridge and another scoop with my before workout meal which usually consists of a large potato and some tuna / mayo / salad combo. Also I take MuscleFuel dynamic after my workout, with 1 scoop of muscle fuel 1 hour before bed. This along with some creatine, BCAA's and 5 / 6 350-500 calorie meals per day in total (more calories before workout then after).

I've been wondering how simple modifications can improve this and the idea of adding oats to a protein shake seems ideal. For say the PWO shake? would this help with the tired feeling I seem to get?

Thanks, I have tried this previously. I found I couldn't get the oats blended(electronically) enough to use in a shake. They just lay at the bottom of the shaker/cup. :(
