Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Too overpriced IMO (and in general, Maximuscle products are overpriced for what they are)

What are your goals and what do you hope to gain from taking this?
Well Im a beginner so I not completly sure on what protein to buy. I was just doing it by the reviews on Amazon. Anyone got a good suggestion on what protein powder a beginner should start with? Goals are to put mass on and lose my body fat. I play football (soccer) every saturday a 90 minute game so that is my cardio workout.

PhD seem to be well liked, their all in one "Synergy" tastes pretty good too. Which do you want to do first: put on mass or lose it? Because you can't really do both at the same time

Just spend the money on more food, its healthier, more filling and keeps you fuller for longer!

Supplements dont have to be appart of your diet, and are only effective if you have a well put together diet :)

I've used Phd products, never used Maximuscle as mentioned overpriced for tiny quantities.

Would deffinatley recommend Phd products for somebody who didn't wish to use unbranded/bargain products.

Personally though I'd just buy some True Whey, Oats/Dextrose etc & Monohydrate from Myprotein and mix up my own version of Synergy as it'll probaly work out cheaper and you can adjust the formula whenever you want.

just taken delivery of my first shake, got some impact whey from myprotein, used someones code on here for referral :)
I want to put some fine scottish oats in to add some complex carbs and maybe thicken it up a bit. My mum has suggested readybrec might work? anyone tried it?

I seem to have this fear that carbs will make me stack on fat because i want to bulk as cleanly as possible because I hate the idea of getting fat.. can someone set me straight?
I've seen pictures on bodybuilding forums where people have gone nuts bulking and stacked on a load of weight without much muscle gain, I really want to avoid this :)

cheers

carbs are ok post workout, unless you are on a really drastic cut and even then you can have some.
aim for 1.5- 2x the amount of protein, I'm a a rather big individual so I go for 45grams of protein and 90grams of oats for my constant lean bulk. :D

Yup, I had a readybrek shake in the morning and PWO when I was on my last bulk, it works quite well but can be a bit lumpy. Some Ultra fine oats would give you a smoother more consistant shake!

Don't worry too much about eating too many carbs, save them for your breakfasts on training days and again PWO. This should keep your glycogen stores well stocked :)

I generally try to eat my carbs in the morning/lunch time and not in the evenings except for pwo, though the even meal might be basta based but as a rule of thumb I won't carb load and then go to bed!

Sorry, nothing does "per se" as it's a natural phenomena, but carbs generate a higher insulin response which doesn't help GH do it's thing. GH with IGF1 help growth, and you do all your growing at night, so to ensure your body is preped for growth, other than lots of sleep, protein 30-60mins before bed is ideal, preferably slow released protein.

Indeed. High glycaemic index foods suppresses the release of GH owing the hormonal responses needed to deal with such foods. Now protein still causes a slight insulin trigger, but it will be at much lower levels.

This is why diet, exercise but most of all sleep is vital for growth. Typically about 1hr after falling asleep you'll be releasing high levels of GH. Monopolising that is vital if you want to take advantage of it. It's times like this where supps are hardly required, if you can learn to cycle your own hormonal releases you can pretty much get yourself into an almost constant anabolic state. Bloody hard work though! :D

Diabetics call it the dawn phenomenon (thou they normally report it much later than 1hr after going to sleep)

The liver releases glycogon during the night at a higher rate than during the day for many. This causes problems for us as our bodies don't release insulin to match it. Too overcome this a lot of diabetics eat cheese at night. Having cheese makes your body work at processing that and so the liver doesn't release as much glycogon.

While this isn't really about bodybuilding I thought people might be interested that people that can test their blood glucose see this and how fats and proteins effect it.

Thou this seems to go against the advice given here strangely, I don't know if it is the same for non-diabetic thou I expect it is.

Freefaller, any good reading material for this sort of thing? I like the sound of it, I'll be transferring my carbs to the morning and afternoon for sure.
