Supplements the debate/discussion thread

It seems the lemon cheesecake from myprotein is awesome, better than the strawberries & cream imho.

worst thing i've ever bought! tastes so bad i feel like dying.. and i've only used 200g's of it.. out of 2.5kg bag :( will probs give it to my bro..

Haha, I guess it's the marmite of the whey world - a few others who have tried it seemed to love it!.

Strawberries & cream, lemon cheesecake, banana, vanilla so far & liked them all (maybe I'm not picky!).

for the noobs who have obviously never done cardio

burning 250 calories in under 15 mins on a treadmill is easy if you are running at a decent pace.

i got the info directly from a polar heart rate monitor. which tracks my heart rate throughout the whole run, it knows all my personal details, like age, height, weight, etc.

no idea how it calculates calories burned but it is usually higher than whatever the treadmill says.

since polar make the best heart rate monitor's on the planet, i would take their reading over the treadmill any day. even if that isn't enough, i shall take some readings off my treadmill through ifit online:

2.5 km
12m

223 cals Jul 1 2013

223 cals in 12 minutes in that run

2.5 km
12m

223 cals

again the same run with same calorie burn on treadmill

5.0 km
26m

450 calsJun 26 2013

450 calories in 26 mins (slower pace)

usually my heart rate monitor has an even higher amount burned on it than the treadmill. all the above readings are from the treadmill.

come at me bro

Something up with your treadmill? Running 2.5k in under 10 mins only gives me 120 calories burnt on my treadmill readout.

Just got my first bag of TPW whey went with cherry bakewell, first time away from MP strawberry/cream. Hoping this is going to be good!

Also bought "greens" I'm already dreading trying that out.

The Facts
According to a 2003 study from Syracuse University, published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, men burn an average of 124 calories when running one mile, and women burn an average of 105.

Misconceptions
People often believe that running and walking burn the same number of calories, but the Syracuse study shows that running burns a lot more. In the study, male walkers burned just 88 calories over one mile and female walkers just 74, a significant difference.

Considerations
These general guidelines are affected by your specific situation.

If you weigh more, you will burn more calories because the amount of mass you are moving a given distance is greater than the amount of mass moved by someone who weighs less. This usually means men will burn more calories than women while doing the same activity.

To find your personal total calorie burn, multiply your weight in pounds by .75. The result will tell you how many calories you're burning per mile.

Context
If you are jogging to lose weight, the key is to burn more calories than you consume.

You have to jog one mile to burn the calories from a medium-sized banana. It takes almost four miles to burn off the calories from one medium order of fast food French fries, which have about 370 calories.

To lose one pound of fat, you'll need to burn about 3,500 calories, or jog about 35 miles.

Enhancements
If you want to burn more calories jogging, you can increase the number of calories you burn in a couple of ways.

Running faster ups the intensity of your exercise, making you burn more calories.

Running on an inclined surface also increases the number of calories you burn. In general, you can count on burning about 10 percent more calories with every added degree of incline.

Hahahahaha :D

"The facts", that study probably used 10 males all horribly overweight then claims that average applies to everyone

You're not everyone, and you're either incredibly unfit so your heart rate is much higher than it should be, or you're running at a very very high intensity for 12 minutes, so are incredibly fit!

running at a constant speed of around 12.5 km/h usually

fastest i have done a 2.5K at is 13 km/h constant

anyway you just basically confirmed it is possible to burn 250 calories very easily within 15 mins on a treadmill :o

I didn't confirm it at all lol

For you to get close to 250 calories, you'd have to be at 90% max of your heart rate I'd imagine for the majority of the 12 minutes. Which on a treadmill is extremely hard to do, especially at 12.5mkm/h

Only other way you could do it at that speed is to be on an high incline, which again would put your heart rate right up.

If you were doing either of those, then it might be possible, but even then I doubt it

For example, an hour on the cross trainer for me at a medium resistance and a steady pace, at a heart rate range of 110-130bpm burns around 400 calories max. That's an hour, and on a cross trainer too so a lot more strenuous and using more muscle groups

it would be about 20 calories out, so yes high but not significantly

also how do you know im not running on an incline ;)

No it would be more than 20 calories, add the half of their 120 so 60 and you get 180, you said your monitor is telling you 250 calories, that would be a difference of 70.

If you were running on an incline I'm sure you would have stated in the post above or are you going to add that bit now to try and crawl back this rather large calorie discrepancy between facts and figures.

is this from the cross trainer or a heart rate monitor?

also if a cross trainer is more strenous then you would be hitting a much higher BPM

130 BPM isnt even entering an aerobic zone for me, never mind anaerobic.

i think my aerobic zone starts at around 145 bpm, anaerobic around 160 BPM and red line around 190+

edit:

The Energy Efficient or Recovery Zone for me is

134-149 bpm

The Aerobic Zone is

149 - 164 bpm

The Anaerobic Zone is

164 - 178 bpm

The Red Line Zone is

178+

that's for me personally

i could basically run with a BPM of 110-130 for several hours (it isn't strenous)

It isn't strenuous, but that's not what I was getting at. I'd imagine me doing 12.5km/h on a treadmill would give exactly the same heart range, that's the point I was making.

And that's a chest strap linked to the MyZone system in our gym, giving all kinds of information on the screens around the gym. It's a pretty awesome system

why don't you try it next time and then report back? ;)

12.5 km/h constantly on a treadmill for 12 minutes

if your staying under my recovery zone, then you should look into becoming a professional runner because your basically mo farah or even better than him.
