Supplements the debate/discussion thread

So for all the good it might possibly do me, I may as well continue as I was without the BCAA's and another small dent in my wallet :)

You might notice something, but it won't be quantitative... so I'd just not bother. Have a coffee with some cream in it before you work out. :)

Oh and regarding the MCT Oil, would I be better getting the MCT powder from MP: http://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/mct-powder/10575138.html

or getting the actual coconut oil as Matt linked me to or doesnt it really matter?

Yeah, I'd be interested, too... but am too lazy so just wind up ripping myself off in Tesco with their own Gucci brand of coconut oil... :o

Went to order some more Craze and the price has jumped from £34 up to £42.. Oh hell no!

My gut says if you want to eat a type of fat it should be oily not a powder :) Bit like you can get vitamin D in tablet form but the body absorbs best with fats. Not sure you'll get anything better than a gut feeling on this but there might be real data out there.

this is the first pre-workout I've tried! gives a nice kick up my bum and have no problems sleeping 1hr after my workout either :o

Just tried the new chocolate peanut flavour whey from Bulk Powders. It reminds me of the green triangle sweets from Quality Street - really nice.

Blah blah blah referal code MJ22982.

Last of my supp reviews - TheProteinWorks flavours (using their Solo 80 shakes/samples)

Rhubarb & Custard - I don't like rhubarb… and this doesn't taste of custard! I found this hard to drink as rhubarb has a sharp flavour and this is the first shake I've had that I'd actively avoid, left an unpleasant aftertaste as well. Perhaps if you like the stuff you'd like this, but it's not for me.

Butterscotch Ripple - this was drinkable, although I'm not a great butterscotch fan. This is a lot less rich than the real thing though and not overly sweet, but not very memorable for me either.

Banana Smooth - an apt name, this is a simple, creamy banana flavour; inoffensive as it's not too strong but it's not a subtle flavour.

Banoffee - very similar to MP's product, although perhaps slightly smoother. Banana with a hint of toffee, not too sweet.

Lemon Shortcake - lemon without any bitterness, reminds me of less sweet lemon curd. Reasonably drinkable and pleasant but like banoffee, something that might work better as fluff vs liquid.

Strawberries & Cream - compared to MP's flavour of the same name, this is less like the sweets and more like a creamy strawberry - more convincing in taste and a richer pink colour. Strawberry fans will obviously get on with this.

Vanilla Creme - an apt name as this is a very creamy vanilla, and although slightly sweet, is stronger than MP's equivalent shake and creamier. Quite nice.

Caramel Macchiato - tastes a bit like coffee caramel and is fairly sweet, although quite nice. Rich dark colour and better than MP's mocha which is somewhat similar in terms of sweet toffee.

Jaffa Cake - looks like a chocolate milkshake, tastes like liquid Jaffa cakes. This sounds good in theory but the reality is it's rather sweet and some might find it sickly. An interesting idea but not sure about the execution.

Apple Cinnamon Swirl - a mild apple flavour with a hint of cinnamon spice, which elevates this muddy, bitty looking shake ahead of the apple Flavdrops, although it's still not something I'd choose for whey - might work well with oats or some sort of baking though. Not unpleasant but not that inspiring either.

Chocolate Silk - looks like chocolate, tastes like chocolate. Not overly sweet... cant really see where you can go wrong here, barring the macros being less protein per gram than say, unflavoured. Not much else to say!

Cherry Bakewell - the infamous flavour... Colour is relatively unflavoured whey-looking, the taste however is a fairly light cherry with a hint of cakiness about it, not sure how to describe it. Pretty nice but wouldn't rave about it, although I'd be happy to work through a bag.

Milk Choc Coconut - very similar to MP's choc coconut, except a touch sweeter and the flavour is a little more balanced. Pretty good.

Choc Mint Brownie - oh yes. Looks like all the other TPW chocolate flavours, tastes like liquid Aero, which is a good thing for me. Like the other chocolate flavours, this is good stuff and I'd drink it regularly if it weren't for the fact it's just plain cheaper to get unflavoured whey and flavour it yourself, both cost per serving wise and protein per serving wise. Still, if you like chocolate and mint, you can't go wrong here.

Nice honest reviews w/ out the usual hyperbole. Pretty similar to my own views. Most of them were nice but nothing to get excited about.

Flavourings
Best to give ratings/rankings for flavours.

I use MyProtein flavouring, mixed with whey protein concentrate.
Flavouring is the best, because you can keep changing flavours on a day to day basis, so you never get bored.
I would never buy flavoured protein, now that I've used supplementary flavourings.

I have ranked the flavourings below:
<best>
1. mocha (powder)
2. toffee (liquid)
3. banana (liquid)
3. strawberry (liquid)
3. vanilla (liquid)
6. raspberry (liquid)
6. apple (liquid)
<worst>

Oats
I also mix toffee with milled oats, milk + water + mixed nuts + stevia (ie. toffee and nut flavoured porridge). Its definitely the best tasting porridge I have ever had.

Peanut & Almond Butter
If you like peanut butter, then MyProtein Peanut butter is top notch. Almond butter is ok, but I prefer Peanut butter.

The only supplement I have bought recently which has been binned is MCT powder, otherwise everything has gone down well.

Yeah I get the Flavdrops usually to use with unflavoured.

Not tried banana
Apple is deffo the worst, tastes like weird apple sweets
Raspberry 2nd worst (works well with quark but that's it)
Vanilla I really like, usually with quark but it's entirely inoffensive with whey either w/water or milk. I put a drop in my redbush tea too.
Strawberry is decent with whatever although it's still a bit of a 'fake' flavour
Chocolate tastes more like malty something or other than actual chocolate, but is good w/oats (or weetabix'n'whey lol) or milk+whey. Doesn't work that well with water.
Toffee is good... when used like the chocolate as well. Not ones I'd use with water but for milk, or water/whey/oats etc it's good. I put drops of both the chocolate or toffee in black coffee for the lulz sometimes as well.

Have you tried mocha flavouring powder? If not, give it a go. I was surprised to find it tasted so real (ie. not fake, like the rest of the flavourings).

I have never bought any of the powdered flavourings, because the Flavdrops last so long - I typically have anywhere between 0-2 scoops of whey a day, depending on where the rest of my protein intake has come from. It's not very filling when drunk so although it's cheap, I prefer to try and avoid drinking it unless I'm 20-40g short after the main meals that day have been worked out.

Where are people buying their whey from for best value for money? From my small amount of research, bodybuildingwarehouse seems cheapest for flavoured whey...

I've checked TPW, MyProtein, BulkPowders and BBW. Any others?

Just ordered 5kg of unflavored impact whey from my protein for £46, go seem to be around £44 for 4kg, from a quick glance the nutritional value looks about the same with myprotein being just slightly higher bar protein content all by .2/3 . Extra 1kg for £2.odd.

£5 off codes around too, if you need one.
