Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Honestly, you can say "I don't care about taste I take it for results" all day long. BUT when you are fasting 17 hours per day working out 6 days per week eating veg/fruit/meat and very very low carbs apart from post workout its nice to have a shake that tastes nice or decent atleast - that much I dont mind paying £60 for 5lbs.

Given that there's no reason to avoid carbs before working out and unflavoured whey can be used to make protein fluff/pancakes/cake/proats etc about £40 for 5kg and 20g protein per scoop = lasts forever and more money to spend on more voluminous food.

stufflol, if you get the chance, try the following flavourings from MP:
1. unflavoured whey + mocha powder flavouring
2. unflavoured whey + toffee liquid flavouring

For me these are the best tasting I have tried, ever. And the cost is low.

Back in the late 90s I used to use MaxiMuscle, but that was before the bulk suppliers were supplying cheap protein to end users. And even Maximuscle protein didnt taste as good as the flavours above.

If money is no object though, you might want to try out some of the exotic flavours from The Protein Works. They are very expensive, but they do have many flavours, which plenty of people on this forum seem to like.

The bulk suppliers get them all from the same places, which is why things like 5kg bags of unflavoured whey are never on offer (bar when you get a 10% off anything code etc), they make less of a profit on that stuff than the fancier (i.e. unecssary) stuff. Shouldn't matter too much as long as it's from one of the big ones (MP/TPW/GN etc).

My powder seems to have become more clumpy in its packaging, and isn't mixing as well as it did at the beginning, I'm suspecting there is some moisture in it. Just wondering whether adding rice or silica gel packs to the pack is advisable? I'm hoping to draw the moisture out and "rescue" it, although it still drinkable just a bit lumpy.

so what unflavoured brand is best ?

They are pretty much all the same, just get the cheapest.
The likes of MaxMuscle have huge advertising (amongst other) costs, which is why they add a considerable markup.
They also add some other ingredients which they claim will work miracles.

I have started taking Creatine for about a week now. I dont know what it is but for the first couple of hours after taking it I feel so sleepy its unreal. Its like my body shuts down. I take 5 grams with water in the morning. Im using the bulkpowders Mono Creatine.

5g a day? Thats not a great loadout really if so .
Also if your having those side effects I would stop, its really not worth it. (sounds like your body is saying no!)
Why not just take Protein and BCAAs?

What's you age and how many times a week do you workout?

5g of creatine a day is allegedly all your body can absorb in a day, "loading" is just tripe and a scheme in which they can make more money by you using the supplement quicker.

Massive vote for BCAA.
I buy this in powder form and my recovery rate is massively increased. Virtually no DOMS, the next day.

Yeah I might stop using it. Did a bit of research on the net and everywhere its saying theres no side affects to creatine. Maybe its just my body or something.

I also take a proten shake twice a day (2 scoops each time). My diet is pretty good but its hard for me to get enough Protein from food alone.

My age is wrong side of 30 :-(...:-)

Train 3 times a week full body workout. Rest days in between. Sunday morning 1 hour cardio session only

I just tried my "unflavoured" whey protein from MyProtein and it tastes of vanilla. Completely different to the last two batches I had. Quite annoying as the vanilla taste is really fake and disgusting when it repeats on you :/

Its clear that in certain individuals it does cause a bad reaction and if that's happening to you then you shouldn't be using it. Your aiming to get healthier not worse.

Its a bit of an old school supplement anyway really, id go get some BCAA's to replace it, its more 'organic'.:p

There's no reason to avoid carbs, at all.

I tried to do a low carb diet, when cutting. And it didnt go well.
I was exercising about 3-4 hrs/day, 6 days/week.
I felt terrible (weak, low energy, struggling during cardio sessions).
After a month, I did the mirror test. No change.
I then switched to my usual method of cutting (ie. low fat diet) and the fat started shifting very quickly.

In saying all of the above, low carb diets are used by many (especially in Hollywood), so for some people it can work.

For me, low carb (at any stage) doesnt work.
My body NEEDS carbs.
