Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Except there's no evidence fancy versions of whey offer anything that regular whey doesn't.

Could go on forever.

A good analogy I read is comparing different types of whey (concentrate, isolate, hydrolised etc) is like comparing the effectiveness of the velocity of two bullets you've been shot with from two different guns.

Except you were the only one to come in with the smart ass attitude and start going on about all the different types of whey?

All I mentioned was the fact isolate was lactose free?

True whey has digestive enzymes and probiotics which is why I would choose it. But you didn't stop to ask and just went off on one with your assumptions... like I said, everyone's an expert?

You want to base your choice on what's the cheapest then be my guest, it's your body??

Cost is VERY important, in terms of which protein you should choose.
Of course, if you have infinite amounts of money - you can go out and buy the very best. No problem.

But, for most of us, we want value for money.
This means that if we are going to spend an extra £15/kg on a product, we need to know its extra benefit (over the cheaper product).

I'm not saying that True Whey is bad BUT, my way of thinking is that it would be better to get the cheapest whey powder. And with the money you saved (over True Whey) - you can use to buy meat (chicken, tuna, beef, whatever). This would have a better effect on your body than spending it on True Whey.

That's just my opinion, though.

Wonder if anybody can help.

I've just recently had surgery on my shoulder to reconstruct the ligaments holding my clavicle in place., I was never carrying a great deal of bulk but I was fit and strong. In the past 3 weeks of being able to do literally nothing with my right arm I've lost what muscle and definition I had.

My physio is very limiting and obviously I'm not looking to do any damage but I would like your opinions on whether any supplements may be of use here.

My op has caused a reasonable amount of muscle damage and soreness, Also I'm struggling to make proper meals during the day :(

TLDR; had an op on my shoulder and looking for any supplements that may aid my recovery.

TIA :)

First supplement you should consider is food. Eat lots of protein (meat, fish, nuts, whatever).

Next stuff that has evidence to support sparing of muscle tissue during trauma is glutamine (research is in patients with serious trauma, I.e. car accidents and cancer), but...

Next is something less clear like cissus quadrangularis. Eastern medicine loves this and it has ben shown to heal fractures in dogs much faster than controls... I bought some for my bro who had an ACL reconstruction (second one) and he aaid it made a big difference... whatever that is worth.

None of this stuff will ave your 'definition', which is itself a rubbish term for low localised bodyfat combined with muscle perfusion... the only thing that will save that is using those muscles. ;)

Thanks for the info. My idea of definition may not fit in with yours :p

I'll get some nuts and steaks in then :)

I'd best google a supplier for the glutamine and cissy whatsa-me-jobbie as I doubt you find that down the local morrisons no?

Thanks :)

Edit:
This stuff?
£20 for 90 capsules of cissus

And

£10 for 120 capsules of Glucosamine

Also on the foods front I guess if I just keep munching peanut butter sandwiches, steaks and pasta dishes I'll be on to a winner.

You are right: your understanding of 'definition' probably does not match mine. ;) :D

REgarding cissus quadrangularis, the Mega Cissus you linked to is fine - the point is to get 40%+ of the ketosterones for things to start working. The dosage pattern outlined by MP is also only half correct: take two (at least) at a time. The active components of CQ are not harmful until you reach seriously high concentrations, so don't worry about even doubling the stated dose (assuming you want to, of course).

The problem with CQ is it is ridiculously expensive, which is amusing considering it is just a plant that grows quite happily and comparatively widely in the Indian subcontinent...

Regarding glutamine, your link is for glucosamine which:

- is not the same as glutamine;
- doesn't actually do anything, anyway. :)

This is glutamine.

Brilliant thank for your help, order placed. Bought a new shaker as mine is AWOL. I'm only a casual user of supplements, mainly creatine through the summer as I cycle a lot, seems to help my cramps and an AIO protein recovery powder which definitely helps out in the days after a big ride.

MyProtein have been silent about my issue with dodgy whey. Going to chase them up today but I'm not super impressed. Quite close to issuing a paypal chargeback.

If they've been ignoring you then just issue a chargeback through PayPal, it's amazing how quickly someone will be in touch when they see they're going to lose the money.
