Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Well I finally got round to ordering some soy protein from MP. Yargh, it's pretty hideous. Choco smooth flavour. I put in my usual amount of water (not much), shook it up and was left with a stupidly thick paste. Had to keep adding water so now it just tastes really diluted and bleurgh. Anyone want a kilo of it? :p

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good comprehensive multi vitamin tablet?

(I'm aware that the sensible advice normally is that multi vitamins are a bit useless and merely result in expensive ****. However as an IBD sufferer they're apparently helpful for me.)

AFAIK pretty much any basic one will be sufficient, although you end up taking in far more of certain things like Vitamin C than you need. It obviously won't cover your Vitamin D3 needs though which is why a standalone, nice and high strength one is pretty essential for people living under a grey sky and office lighting most of the time (5000iu upwards for the win). The expensive ones supplement companies sell that have silly serving sizes like 5 a day and stuff lliterally = peeing your money down the toilet.

A lot of the basic ones are actually totally useless due to using poor sources for the minerals anything using oxides as a source is best avoided as it's about as bio available as licking the floor.

Yeah I have been supplementing vitamin D (and iron) for a while as I was previously deficient - though as of recent blood tests my vitamin D is normal. Still low on iron but to be expected as I'm still basically slowly bleeding internally until everything gets under control with the meds...

Solgar male formula. The best vitamins on the market. Not the cheapest but the best for a number of reasons.

thanks, potential problem there is Ginseng which ups the immune system whereas it is beneficial for me to keep my immune system lower

Does anyone have any experience with non-dairy protein powders? MyProtein seem to have a bunch but I've got no idea what to try. I've been getting a lot of breakouts lately and I'm thinking I might try cutting out milk and whey for a bit as I'm at a bit of a loss as to what else it could be! Looks like you can choco smooth in soy..

What do you mean by breakouts?

I'm lactose intolerant but I can consume whey isolate. In the past I've tried Soya which was awful. Although, I haven't tried any protein powders in the past 3 years so maybe the soya or other alternatives have came on a bit.

I was recommended Super One Formula from H&B. Pretty decent although I think it upset my stomach at first - which any multivit generally does.

Additional B12 seems to hammer my bowels the worst so for that, I buy the spray under the tongue bottle which is quite expensive but I am deficient.

I thought about pre workouts as my energy has been really low in the gym - I though I'd try a monster (the white zero cal one) and it didn't work. It tasted nice but I just felt shaky and awful during my workout.

So if your going to try it, actually try a pre workout not an energy drink :D

If an off the shelf energy drink made you feel like that I'd highly recommend not trying an actual pre workout as for the most part they have even more stimulants in and will magnify that shaky horrible feeling.

Although it could also be down to the fact that you hadn't eaten enough and that Monster contains no sugar so you'd be buzzing from the energy and feel like you could push through but your body was telling you you were on your arse in terms of actual usable energy reserves.

Yeah after that I don't plan on trying a pre workout. I do train fasted so that probably contributed.

I am about to order some protein powder on offer from prime day, normally go for ON Gold Standard but one has popped up cheaper "PhD Nutrition Diet Whey Meal Replacement Powder" now this is tailored to weight loss which is my goal, is their much difference between the two?
