Supplements the debate/discussion thread

I am about to order some protein powder on offer from prime day, normally go for ON Gold Standard but one has popped up cheaper "PhD Nutrition Diet Whey Meal Replacement Powder" now this is tailored to weight loss which is my goal, is their much difference between the two?

One is to take to top up your protein intake of a normal diet, the latter is meant to be had instead of actual meals.

After a quick look at the ingredients either will do, the PhD stuff contains a few extras that make their label look fancy but will make next to no difference.

Personally I'd leave the branded stuff and go for one of the bulk suppliers like MyProtein, Bulk Powders, The Protein Works or Go Nutrition. These days they have some good flavours if that's your thing and you'll save money over buying fancy branded stuff.

What do people supplement stacks look like nowadays?

I've got a friend who must be taking at least 10 pills/capsules minimum daily.

At the moment I'm just using a multi-vitamin and protein powder.

There is a guy in work who takes loads of pills and two different shakes a day but only goes to the gym 2/3 times a week. I just take protein on weekdays as a mid morning snack basically and pre workout for when I go to the gym after work.

If your diet is well-balanced and managed, the average gym-going bro only really needs to consider caffeine, beta alanine (and taurine), creatine and (if training for endurance) something like citrulline malate.

It is only when you start screwing with your sleep and hormones that other stuff might becomes important. Other people will swear by stuff on a case-by-case/bro-lloquial basis, but - in my humble opinion - as long as you're eating and sleeping properly, the rest is needless expense (the ones above have good evidence based to support them, but most people don't train hard enough to really notice).

The exception to this is creatine as the visual effects are pretty apparent, pretty quickly... Even if the power, hormone and enzyme-level changes are not.

^doesn't seem like that good of a deal to me. It's currently £13.74 per kg.

I get my whey from MyProtein, I believe it's rated #1 in quality/price. Chocolate smooth is by far the best flavour I've tried and with milk it's just like chocolate milkshake. I get the 5kg pouches which works out about just over £9 per kg.

I was looking for another bag of protein then come across this on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Weider-Str...F8&qid=1471298101&sr=8-3&keywords=weider+gold

under £10 a kilo if subscribe and save, just over £10 if bought one off (you can subscribe then cancel too).

I ordered myself some as I think its cheap.

It's cheapish for branded stuff but you're just paying for some nice packing in that case.

Flavoured stuff can be picked up around the £8-9/kg mark from the bulk suppliers.

I used unflavoured impact whey for years but at 10 quid a kilo for a branded tub delivered free by Amazon prime I think it was a better buy than bulk powder places. A plastic tub is nicer than pouches too.

Same flavour in a pouch is over 14 quid delivered from myprotein.

Edit. Price in my link went up. I paid £9 per tub.

This may have answered my question,

which high street shop should I use for some whey protein ? only want a neutral flavour one to stick in my porridge as I need to boost my protein intake

I've never had any, do they taste ok ?

Thanks

I have chocolate flavoured proats every morning, would highly recommend :D

The Weider Gold stuff turned up anyway.

Verdict is that it mixes well, tastes good, and even has chocolate chips in it! so its a thumbs up from me! , even moreso at the price I bought it.

Just wish I'd stocked up for the year :(
