Supplements the debate/discussion thread

For anyone interested, maxi nutrition protein bars are £1 each at tesco at the minute. Mint choc flavour is pretty tasty, cherry is a bit meh.

they always seem to go on offer at a tesco near me.

it's a little shop in a student area, sells mostly crap on the go stuff (meal deals, pots of nuts, ready meals etc)
doesn't even sell tubs of icecream :@

Not great tasting and really stick to your teeth. I have to get through 23 more of these things!

Think I will stick to protein shakes at work from now on.

Agreed, they taste utterly foul and take about 5 minutes to chew through, some good quality whey in milk is so much nicer, quicker and healthier (for ya teeth anyway)

My multi doesn't contain any iron and although my diet does contain a decent amount of meat, leafy green veg etc, I figured it couldn't hurt to take a supp for the days I don't eat as much of the above. Pretty much all of my training is endurance based and I thought it wouldn't hurt to ensure I was getting enough.

It'd also be good for the missus. :) If my assumptions are wrong then let me know.

Ah OK, just curious, I'm no expert, I just read that somewhere that men have no problems with iron deficiency (master gender :D) so thought it was better to just use a multi that covered all bases than spend money on one which has little benefit. I know women often need iron supplements.

Does anyone have any experience with non-dairy protein powders? MyProtein seem to have a bunch but I've got no idea what to try. I've been getting a lot of breakouts lately and I'm thinking I might try cutting out milk and whey for a bit as I'm at a bit of a loss as to what else it could be! Looks like you can choco smooth in soy..

Anyone got any data about what slow cooking does to the nutritional value of food? Are macros affected much?

micro nutrients may be affected but it would be a total guess on what actual difference it would make and as said macro nutrients shouldn't change by anything worth worrying about.

Tried both soy and pea protein... and pea is really, really gross. Soy if used in the right doses tastes like soy milk, but it is really hydrophilic and the shake thickens up REALLY quickly if you don't down it straight away.

Soy also behaves really nicely if you add in oats and Nesquik.

Thanks. Do you mean unflavoured Soy is really gross? Mixed with what, water? I see you can get choco smooth so I'd probably just get that. I only have them after swimming 2-3 times a week so I don't faff around with flavours much.

Ha, I wasn't really referring to the pea, I meant to ask - does the soy taste like soy when mixed with soy milk. Or did he mean when mixed with water. And what flavour etc.

I've just tried my choco smooth whey mixed with just water (usually mix with milk) and it's pretty rough :(

To be honest I down protein shakes so quickly that I can't really taste it until afterwards - at which point I brush my teeth to get rid of the crappy taste :p Probably easier than worrying about how different brands/types taste.
