I would be very surprised. The tree itself is a bit of a hotspot, but it's on Hadrian's Wall anyway, so there'll always be plenty of walkers.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was a local who doesn't like the grockles coming from all over to visit it. After all, we do appear to be becoming increasingly insular as a people.

I do wonder if there's some kind of long running land ownership dispute or tensions between national trust and farmers or some other local disagreement that's been brewing for years before leading to this though... just seems like it would be such a lot of effort to go to for pure vandalism? Then again maybe the person that did it is the type that gets a kick out of the negative attention.

There's a B road very close that you could easily park on the side of and cut across the field in a minute or two.

It’s literally in the middle of nowhere though. A good few miles from any significant village (yes there are isolated buildings along the road). There is a farm about a mile away.
