Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall 'felled overnight'

Looking at Google Maps, there's a few places I'd start

Clipboard01.jpg

Peel Cottage
Springwell Cottage
Stoneacre Barn
High Shield Cottage
I’d imagine they are AirBnB type places or available for rent so they’d literally be destroying part of their income by damaging a local landmark.

Already been renamed to Sycamore Stump on Google Maps, with the trolls already leaving reviews:

...and angry people who don't understand how this sort of data gets updated.

A stunning place and a sadly what was a beautiful tree... not quite sure how a company like Google feels it has the right to change the name of this place... IT is " Sycamore gap ".. NOT "Sycamore Stump"... Shame on you GOOGLE...correct your error!!!

Same thing happened to the Glastonbury thorn a couple years back iirc. Blatant vandalism. Anybody with any experience would remove limbs first cutting it like that it could land anywhere its extremely dangerous

I wonder if it's a Farmer that's done it, and was hoping people would blame Storm Agnes bringing it down
A storm that makes clean chainsaw cuts, ok.

I was there last month. It is/was a lovely spot and the thought crossed my mind that if someone wanted to meddle with it there wouldn't be much to stop them.

Unfortunately the British countryside has become a bit of target in recent years, and despite the unknown motives of the perpetrator I have no doubt there are people revelling in this. Going out into nature gives one an opportunity to escape for a while. What better way to bring outrage culture into the countryside than to do this.

my moneys on #Peel cottage.

release the hounds

oh its a rental cottage :p £450 a day f that,,,
Yeah, it's probably all Airbnb's judging by the icons.

Does add to the idea that it's a disgruntled local that's done it due to the tourism though.

Maybe they should have got in on the Airbnb action if they can get £450 a night in the area.

With all that is wrong in the world right now, sometimes the it's the most innocuous things really make me anngry and this is one of them. What on earth does the person who has done this think they have achieved, it was such an iconic location and the beauty of it has been robbed from us. I feel as angry right now as when the Crooked House in Himley "suffered" a fire and was then quickly demolished last month, which I'm still ******* angry about.

The Crooked House (pub) was the first thing I thought of as well when I started reading this thread. It's 100% deliberate and the same goes with the tree. Fine the buggers and make them do 160 hours of community service. Do something decent and contribute back into society.

Seems a weird act of vandalism. I bet it's a disgruntled farmer or council jobsworth mistake.

In China they execute people for destroying national/historic stuff. Like the guy who cut the head off one of the terracotta soldiers. One thing they got right.
