Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall 'felled overnight'

When asked 'who did it?' the police responded by saying they are truly stumped.

Breaking: the police have said they're too busy going after people who say mean things on twitter, so they've had to pass the case onto Special Branch.

In all seriousness, words fail me. I am genuinely saddened by this news. I hope the culprit is quickly identified.

I’d love to see you attempt it ‘Mythbusters’ style. Not allowed to do it in daylight hours though.

You don't need a massive chainsaw to do that job, the heaviest portable petrol ones are 10-15kg with fuel (https://www.stihl.co.uk/en/p/chainsaws-ms-881-petrol-chainsaw-122436) which any healthy bloke can carry a short distance.

Nothing to stop them using a torch either. Not many people go up there overnight, and even if someone did drive by, they'd think it was just an amateur photographer or something trying to get some pictures.

I don't know of the tree. But it's so sad. It's a living thing that has been there for a long time. Just because it doesn't move like an animal it still has a right to live. I'm really starting to hate what this country has become.

Calling @SpellowHouse could this be your guy? They didn't take it away either.

Sounds like you've given this a lot of thought...

Police have vowed to bring anyone responsible for the felling of the iconic Sycamore Gap Tree to justice 'swiftly and appropriately'. Officers are treating the overnight incident as a deliberate act of vandalism, launching a full investigation.

A range of inquiries are currently ongoing, with the support of partners - as police look to identify the full circumstances surrounding the damage. They are also hopeful of identifying those involved.

This has made me genuinely sad, what kind of person would go and do that deliberately. What an absolute ****. I know it's "only" a tree but I'd have them locked up for years if they're found.

I think the maximum sentence for criminal damage (excluding arson) is 10 years?

You can well imagine if Ayahuasca someone does get caught and convicted for this, they'll not be getting a particularly lenient sentence.

Yeah its gotta be some local **** that has a problem with their land being used as a car park and all the extra footfall.

What a complete c word. Hope they catch them and throw the book at them.
