System Shock Remake!!!!!!!11111one

Yes and no. Games didn't give a toss about wasting the player's time back then, so you'll be backtracking to medical every five mins to heal up, and that backtracking takes several minutes.

There's not a huge challenge in combat with regular enemies, and the AI is weak. You can always retreat and disengage and the AI will not attempt to follow you. You can often just snipe them from long range and they can't do anything about it.

Then there are quite a few unfair situations, like surrounding the player with explosive barrels and just blowing you up as you enter a room. Again, this could fly in 1993 but not so much now. It's cheap. Or the enemies that decloak in front of you and can't be detected by any means. By the time you can see them and react to them, they've hit you at least twice and irradiated you. Cheap.

Then you get to a boss and the rules of the game change for no reason. Cheap.

Takes a deep breath. Exhales, aahhh fresh air!

Just kidding. I get your points and you are probably right.

Did you enjoy the game overall, got your moneys worth? Worth £20?

Yes, I paid £25 and that's fair.

With the bloody controls fixed I might be able to beat the sodding boss and move on :p I'm just that weird type of PC gamer that plays PC games with a controller... hate me if you like :p

Just completed it. Absolutely fantastic. I really hope they do SS2 as well.

For boss fights - the reflex patch is fantastically useful.

I did have one issue where I got to the point where I needed an item and had misremembered where I had dropped it to make inventory space. Thankfully I found it after a bit of searching. I would definitely recommend - if you pick something up that can't be vaporised and can't be used, it's probably important. You don't need to keep it on you, but make sure you note down where you dropped it!

Hmm, I hate to be that guy, but...

Up to now, my game has been mostly bug free (discounting UI bugs when using a controller).

Now a couple come up, one of them a real head-scratcher.

Firstly, the boss I was having issues with, if you survive a couple mins and haven't killed it, it gets reliably stuck in geometry. This basically means you get to end the fight by emptying rounds into its back as it sits there unresponsive. Oh well. I did reload a couple times for a fair fight, but this happens every time now. I think it gets faster as the fight goes on, and at some point its speed is just making it clip into the wall.

Anyway, after putting it out of its misery, I enter a lift which takes me to a dead end with no way out. The lift only goes up, the buttons to reverse direction are broken (they spark when pressed), and there's nowhere to go (vertically or otherwise). No buttons to press. Just trapped in a closet.

The other possibility is this is a "FU" from the devs to the players, making a dead-end room that they have to reload to exit? Seems a bit weird, tbh. There's absolutely no way out of this little pokey room at the top of a broken elevator. Bizarre.

e: Ugh. In case anyone else gets stuck there, you just have to use "action" on all the walls until you find the one that opens. There's no visual indication that any of them do anything, so it's quite the surprise when what looks like a wall just opens like a door.

I played the game when it first came out, no internet then but managed to complete it after a few attempts on middle difficulty without a walkthrough.

Its an awesome faithful reboot, but as an elderly gamer with arthritis n stuff, struggling with the difficult bits, like in cyberspace to get the reactor code ... I know what to do, the ice thing first, but I'm stuck LOL.

I wonder if I could send someone a save game file to get me past this bit please?

EDIT: the reactor code is randomised apparently, so i cant cheat by looking at walkthroughs !!!

The cyberspace bits are brutally hard, even on middle difficulty. Just done the Executive level cyber bit, and was raging hard :p No, not like that!

As for my game, just got the E-Pack v1, and headed off to Beta Grove, to find that v1 is insufficient. So now got to backtrack through all the levels looking for v2.

The game is not linear and thats wonderful, yes there is some backtracking but its important to the plot. Also you don't need to backtrack to medical as much as you seem to have been doing my friend, there are other ways, like careful exploration on each level and shooting the cameras to lower security ,,, and ultimatly the computer nodes too (make a note of the codes!!) Perhaps restart the game, set yourself realistic difficulty settings, at the very least keep plot one above minimum though, but it can still get difficult.

Conserve your ammo, especially in early part of game, use the blunt weapons as much as poss, then the laser gun when you find it and learn where the recharge stations are, Sparq I think its called, save best weapons and ammo for later, you'll need them ... Its a very strategic game IMHO that can be approached in many different ways and like others have said, no hand holding ... this is no instant gratification shoot em up like Doom and its clones.

You know what .. I've played SS1 and SS2 many times in original forms ... SS1 is by far the most satisfying to beat, and the space station in SS1 is architecturally more sound and seems plausable in a future world. Both awesome games though by an incredibly talented bunch of individuals ... Looking Glass Studios.

I played SS2 years and years ago. It was a lot (lot!) more straight-forward to navigate than SS1.

So I guess LGS decided that a bit of hand-holding wasn't so bad, after all :p

I also didn't realise you could lean until level 6 or something, haha. Makes avoiding being hit a fair bit easier. Albeit it's a lot more fiddly to pull off with a controller (giggity).

Played about an hour so far. Enjoying it. I am playing everything on normal difficulty. Was even tempted to set puzzles to easy based on stuff I read, but said to myself no! I always like to play games on normal difficulty.

Any non spoiler tips on what not to vaporise/recycle? Or generally any other tips? One thing I will be doing when I need space is either dropping all my stuff next to the medical bay or adding a marker on the map. I read a few people dropping stuff and later looking for it for ages. Lol

Also is there a point carrying the pipe once you have the wrench which seems to be stronger?

Anything that is plot-important, you can't vaporise anyway - so knock yourself out.

I think the pipe and wrench are alternatives, rather than one being definitely better. The pipe stats are lower, but it has a longer reach. Personally I took every opportunity to increase my ammo pool across multiple weapons, and managed without a melee weapon in the end. As well as freeing up inventory by removing the weapon, there's also a couple of patches that you can stop carrying too (berserk and stamina).

But definitely - picking places to drop inventory and mark it is a good plan. The cargo lift is a little helpful, but way too small to make a lot of difference.

I got through the entire game barely ever using the lean function. I did get a blast of annoyance-nostalgia about the occasional need to crouch-jump though. Who ever decided back then that was a good and fun mechanic?

The v1 is only environmental, not radioactive I think. I did wait until I had the v2 to do Beta Grove. But you still need to keep a close eye on your energy and health levels and every now and again use a battery (so the suit doesn't switch off) and a medikit (because you still take some damage over time).

Throughout the game, I never really got the hang of when to use the patch which lowers your radiation levels. I think it works by lowering your current level, so no value before hand. During seems to have a minimal effect, and waiting until you're back out of the hazard, the level is dropping fast enough anyway that using the patch will have a small effect on your ongoing damage.

Oh, speaking as a hopeless addict to collecting everything. You really don't need to be absolutely devoted to collecting and scrapping / vaporising everything you see. I bought all ammo and mods from every machine and still ended the game with 300+ credits.
So:
1) you don't need to be anal about recycling rather than vaporising to maximise gains.
2) you can give yourself a break about managing your inventory extra carefully to be able to collect as much as possible.

The V2 E-Pack isn't available until after you've done the grove.

I decided to give up searching the station for the V2 and just Google how you're supposed to approach the grove. Turns out you just need to eat the continual health loss and keep healing up with items. That wasn't obvious because the game keeps hinting that there are better versions of the E-pack available. There are, but not *before* the grove!

So I'm glad I looked. Could have wasted hours backtracking looking for it.

I'm playing everything on Normal except puzzles which I set to Hard. I wanted the puzzles to be harder - in truth they're just trial and error.

I don't think this is true. I'm not 100% sure - but 90% that I had the v2 when I did the grove. I remember turning it on especially, and I remember that it was draining power because it was working to limit the radiation effect.
However I do think that I had to go to a further floor to get the v2 and come back to the grove.

If this is true then that would explain a lot of Foxeye’s issues. Pebcak :p

You can't get the V2 E-pack before doing the grove. Check one of the walkthroughs. The place where you get the V2 is locked by a level security requirement that cannot be met until you've done the grove and returned to the master switch in Diego's office.

(I think Easy difficultly might be different - it seems to let you skip some of the progression requirements? In any case, I'm talking about Normal diff.)

Perhaps you're thinking of the V2 shield, which you get much earlier?

e: Also the grove isn't radiation so the V2 does nothing for you, except what the V1 also does. It's not an upgrade vs the grove. V2 adds radiation protection for doing the Reactor core bits.

e2: To elaborate: the V2 requirement is x<=45% level security. You can't drop level security below 55% until the maintenance tunnels become accessible. These are locked until you've done the grove, and returned to the master switch in Diego's office. The PA then tells you that the tunnels are now accessible. In the tunnels you find the cameras and CPU cores that take level security below 55% (and right down to 0%).

Nah he's remembering wrong, unless he's on Easy difficulty maybe.

You can't "go up a level" and then return, because the higher levels are locked at that time.

I've literally just done the grove part and thus have no need to try to remember it. It's a complete PITA that entails memorising the layout of the level so you can speed run it. Takes a whole bunch of failed attempts to nail it.

e: This Steam thread (not mine) explains it in detail.
